Other offers
Advantages as well as disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Strengths
- They retain full power for around ten years – the loss is just ~1% (based on simulations),
- They maintain their magnetic properties even under external field action,
- A magnet with a metallic silver surface has better aesthetics,
- Neodymium magnets achieve maximum magnetic induction on a their surface, which ensures high operational effectiveness,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they can operate (depending on the shape) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Possibility of custom modeling and adapting to precise needs,
- Huge importance in modern industrial fields – they are commonly used in computer drives, drive modules, medical equipment, as well as modern systems.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they offer powerful magnetic field, making them ideal for precision applications
Cons
- At strong impacts they can break, therefore we advise placing them in steel cases. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- We warn that neodymium magnets can reduce their power at high temperatures. To prevent this, we recommend our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- They rust in a humid environment - during use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Due to limitations in creating threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we recommend using a housing - magnetic mechanism.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets are risky, when accidentally swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, tiny parts of these devices can be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- Due to neodymium price, their price exceeds standard values,
Lifting parameters
Maximum lifting force for a neodymium magnet – what it depends on?
- with the use of a yoke made of special test steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- whose thickness equals approx. 10 mm
- characterized by smoothness
- without any insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- during detachment in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at standard ambient temperature
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Distance (betwixt the magnet and the plate), since even a tiny distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) results in a reduction in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or dirt).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to pulling vertically. When slipping, the magnet exhibits much less (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Substrate thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material type – the best choice is high-permeability steel. Hardened steels may generate lower lifting capacity.
- Surface quality – the more even the plate, the larger the contact zone and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness acts like micro-gaps.
- Operating temperature – neodymium magnets have a negative temperature coefficient. When it is hot they lose power, and at low temperatures they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on a smooth plate of suitable thickness, under perpendicular forces, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Shattering risk
Protect your eyes. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, ejecting sharp fragments into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
Machining danger
Fire hazard: Neodymium dust is highly flammable. Avoid machining magnets without safety gear as this may cause fire.
Safe distance
Device Safety: Neodymium magnets can ruin data carriers and delicate electronics (heart implants, hearing aids, timepieces).
Danger to the youngest
Always keep magnets away from children. Choking hazard is high, and the consequences of magnets connecting inside the body are life-threatening.
Sensitization to coating
It is widely known that nickel (the usual finish) is a potent allergen. If your skin reacts to metals, avoid direct skin contact or opt for encased magnets.
Phone sensors
GPS units and smartphones are highly susceptible to magnetic fields. Close proximity with a strong magnet can decalibrate the internal compass in your phone.
Physical harm
Danger of trauma: The attraction force is so great that it can result in hematomas, crushing, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
Permanent damage
Control the heat. Exposing the magnet to high heat will permanently weaken its magnetic structure and pulling force.
Danger to pacemakers
Warning for patients: Powerful magnets disrupt medical devices. Maintain at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.
Caution required
Use magnets consciously. Their powerful strength can shock even experienced users. Stay alert and do not underestimate their power.
