If someone wants to, they can easily find a series of formulas describing magnetic moment. However, mathematical calculations are usually not necessary for anyone; what matters more is understanding the phenomenon itself. To define magnetic moment, we should start by acknowledging that numerous objects in our world are magnets. Starting from the smallest, invisible to the naked eye, electrons and atoms, through chunks of magnetite, and man-made magnets, all the way to our entire planet. Which, as it turns out, is a massive, powerful magnet from which we and plants and animals benefit. Each of these objects possesses a magnetic field that spreads between its poles in the form of lines. If some physical object is placed in such a field and begins to rotate under the influence of forces acting on it, we then say it has a magnetic moment. In practice, this moment depends on the force acting on the dipole, or rather, the torque. If the lines of the object align with the lines of the field in which the object was placed, it will remain motionless. This can be best illustrated by a simple compass needle. Because it is magnetized, it aligns itself along the Earth's magnetic lines; if deflected, it will move until it achieves stability.

We encounter magnets multiple times in our daily lives, sometimes without even realizing their presence. They are found in every electric motor, in cabinet locks, or bike counters. In typical household appliances, electronics, or computers, there are at least a few of them, and sometimes even dozens. Earth itself is a giant magnet, and that's what compasses rely on for their operation. However, the situation is quite different in African countries compared to Western societies. The level of education in many African countries is very low, and students often struggle with access to basic knowledge.

The versatility of magnets in various applications has been known for a long time. Various electronic devices, toys, and holders are just some of the uses that can be found in our homes. There are many advantages to using magnets. What's important is that their use doesn't have to involve drilling or gluing. Take, for example, magnets for attaching notes and documents. Whether it's on the refrigerator or a dedicated board, all you have to do is detach the magnet and move it to another place. And importantly, exactly where you want it, so you don't have to make another hole in the wall or rush to the store for another tube of glue because the previous one just ran out. Magnetic strips for storing knives and other metal accessories are also very popular. Such a strip needs to be permanently attached to the wall, there's no getting around that. But the way the knives are arranged on it depends entirely on the owner's ingenuity. In addition to practical aspects, it's also worth noting that such a solution looks very elegant and modern. There are plenty of interesting and inspiring examples of using magnets to organize home spaces, such as magnetic hooks that can be easily mounted in your closet using magnetic hooks.

A small glass tube with two embedded metal plates - it looks like a very simple solution. And indeed, it is, except that the plates are made of a special material that, when exposed to a magnetic field, causes them to deflect. This is how a reed switch, one of the most popular sensors based on magnetic forces, works. If a reed switch is placed in a magnetic field and the field is strong enough, the plates will come into contact and allow current to flow through the element. Reed switches are most commonly a part of various control systems, as they themselves are not equipped with any additional accessories. It should be noted that they are not suitable for heavy loads and are generally used as control elements. On the other hand, Hall sensors utilize the phenomenon of an electric voltage appearing in materials placed in a magnetic field, with these materials needing to be conductive. This physical phenomenon was discovered by Edwin Herbert Hall as far back as 1879. Currently, these sensors come in many different types, often with additional elements such as voltmeters, amplifiers, or controllers. Both types of sensors are widely distributed and used in places we wouldn't even suspect. However, it's important to remember the main difference between them. Reed switches indicate the presence of a magnetic field, while Hall sensors can also measure the value of this field.

A typical reed switch sensor has the form of a small tube with a diameter of a few millimeters and a length of two to three centimeters. There are wires leading out of both ends of the tube for connecting the element to an electrical circuit. Inside the reed switch, there are two ferromagnetic blades positioned in such a way that they remain open in the absence of an external magnetic field, and no current flows through the element. However, if such a field appears, whether it comes from a permanent magnet or an electromagnet, an attractive force occurs between the blades. Sufficient magnetic field strength causes magnetization of the blades, eventually bringing them closer together, closing the circuit. When the magnetic field ceases to exist, the blades return to their original positions. The presented diagram describes the operation of typical reed switches, but there are more types available on the market, differing in construction, parameters, and applications. Designers often opt for reed switches with three terminals, known as COM. When choosing to use reed switches, it is important to remember that due to their construction, they are not suitable for heavy loads. Excessive current could cause an electric arc to form and damage the delicate ends of the blades, resulting in irreversible damage to the component.

Screws escaping when screwing in or out can be a nightmare for most DIY enthusiasts. They can effectively complicate work and even halt it if the runaway screw is not found. That's why one of the essential tools that everyone should have in their home is a magnetic screwdriver. Its design is very simple, with a small magnet at the tip that effectively holds screws and bolts, preventing them from escaping. This makes work progress much faster and more efficient. Such a screwdriver is especially useful when screwing in long elements at unusual angles - the risk of them bouncing off somewhere is quite high. Using a magnetic screwdriver completely eliminates this problem, as the magnet will securely hold the screw in place, allowing you to tighten it smoothly. Magnets are also frequently found in tools with interchangeable tips. In such cases, there's no need to screw or secure these tips, as the magnetic force is sufficient to keep them in place.

For many people, the red-blue horseshoe is a symbol of a magnet, perhaps because such magnets are often used in schools as teaching aids. Indeed, the horseshoe is very characteristic and has an incredibly interesting history. It all began in 1821 in England when the local cobbler, William Sturgeon, started experimenting with magnets. William had the desired profession of that time, as he was a cobbler, but in his free time, he was passionate about physics. This passion led him to wind a piece of iron into a U-shaped form with wire and pass an electric current through this wire. This not only marked the first appearance of the horseshoe as a magnet but also became the first electromagnet created by a human. And, importantly in this story, it was the first magnet capable of holding more weight than its mass. Sturgeon's experiments had a significant impact on the development of magnetism, although his name is unfortunately rarely mentioned. He discovered that the shape of a magnet has a significant influence on its strength. In the case of the horseshoe, the magnetic field is more concentrated between the poles due to their shorter distance. This directly translates into a greater attracting force than magnets in the shape of bars or cylinders.
