Pros and cons of rare earth magnets.
Pros
- They retain attractive force for nearly 10 years – the loss is just ~1% (in theory),
- They feature excellent resistance to weakening of magnetic properties as a result of opposing magnetic fields,
- In other words, due to the reflective finish of nickel, the element gains visual value,
- Magnets exhibit very high magnetic induction on the active area,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Possibility of individual forming and adapting to specific conditions,
- Versatile presence in high-tech industry – they are used in mass storage devices, motor assemblies, diagnostic systems, also multitasking production systems.
- Thanks to efficiency per cm³, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Limitations
- Brittleness is one of their disadvantages. Upon strong impact they can break. We advise keeping them in a strong case, which not only secures them against impacts but also raises their durability
- We warn that neodymium magnets can reduce their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we suggest our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material immune to moisture, when using outdoors
- We suggest casing - magnetic holder, due to difficulties in creating threads inside the magnet and complicated shapes.
- Potential hazard related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which becomes key in the context of child safety. It is also worth noting that small components of these products can disrupt the diagnostic process medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameters – what affects it?
- with the use of a sheet made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- with a cross-section of at least 10 mm
- with an ideally smooth contact surface
- without the slightest air gap between the magnet and steel
- under vertical force vector (90-degree angle)
- in temp. approx. 20°C
Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice
- Space between magnet and steel – even a fraction of a millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by varnish or dirt) significantly weakens the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet holds significantly lower power (often approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux penetrates through instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Plate material – low-carbon steel attracts best. Higher carbon content reduce magnetic permeability and lifting capacity.
- Surface finish – full contact is obtained only on polished steel. Any scratches and bumps reduce the real contact area, reducing force.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase causes a temporary drop of induction. Check the thermal limit for a given model.
Holding force was measured on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, in contrast under parallel forces the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
Warnings
Heat sensitivity
Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) lose power when the temperature surpasses 80°C. This process is irreversible.
Magnetic interference
An intense magnetic field disrupts the functioning of magnetometers in phones and navigation systems. Maintain magnets close to a device to avoid breaking the sensors.
Product not for children
Strictly keep magnets out of reach of children. Ingestion danger is high, and the effects of magnets connecting inside the body are tragic.
Finger safety
Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so immense that it can cause hematomas, crushing, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.
Beware of splinters
Beware of splinters. Magnets can explode upon uncontrolled impact, launching sharp fragments into the air. Eye protection is mandatory.
Respect the power
Use magnets consciously. Their immense force can surprise even experienced users. Be vigilant and do not underestimate their force.
Warning for heart patients
Patients with a ICD must keep an large gap from magnets. The magnetism can disrupt the functioning of the implant.
Skin irritation risks
Some people experience a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the standard coating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact can result in dermatitis. We recommend wear safety gloves.
Dust is flammable
Dust produced during cutting of magnets is flammable. Do not drill into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Safe distance
Do not bring magnets near a wallet, laptop, or screen. The magnetism can irreversibly ruin these devices and wipe information from cards.
