Pros as well as cons of neodymium magnets.
Strengths
- They retain full power for almost 10 years – the loss is just ~1% (in theory),
- They are noted for resistance to demagnetization induced by external magnetic fields,
- By covering with a shiny layer of gold, the element has an proper look,
- They feature high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which improves attraction properties,
- Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, enabling functioning at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
- Thanks to the option of precise forming and adaptation to unique needs, neodymium magnets can be manufactured in a broad palette of shapes and sizes, which amplifies use scope,
- Universal use in modern technologies – they are utilized in hard drives, brushless drives, diagnostic systems, as well as other advanced devices.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in small dimensions, which allows their use in compact constructions
Limitations
- At strong impacts they can break, therefore we recommend placing them in steel cases. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in power. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- We recommend cover - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in producing nuts inside the magnet and complicated forms.
- Possible danger related to microscopic parts of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which becomes key in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that small elements of these products are able to complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Holding force characteristics
Maximum holding power of the magnet – what affects it?
- with the contact of a sheet made of low-carbon steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- with a thickness no less than 10 mm
- characterized by even structure
- with total lack of distance (no paint)
- during pulling in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at room temperature
Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice
- Clearance – existence of any layer (paint, tape, gap) acts as an insulator, which reduces capacity steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Load vector – maximum parameter is available only during pulling at a 90° angle. The resistance to sliding of the magnet along the surface is standardly many times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Thin sheet limits the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material type – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may have worse magnetic properties.
- Smoothness – ideal contact is possible only on polished steel. Rough texture reduce the real contact area, reducing force.
- Operating temperature – NdFeB sinters have a negative temperature coefficient. At higher temperatures they are weaker, and in frost they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Holding force was measured on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the load capacity.
Precautions when working with NdFeB magnets
Avoid contact if allergic
Warning for allergy sufferers: The nickel-copper-nickel coating consists of nickel. If redness happens, immediately stop handling magnets and wear gloves.
Caution required
Before starting, read the rules. Uncontrolled attraction can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Think ahead.
Bone fractures
Large magnets can smash fingers instantly. Do not place your hand betwixt two strong magnets.
ICD Warning
Individuals with a pacemaker have to keep an large gap from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the operation of the life-saving device.
Demagnetization risk
Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) lose magnetization when the temperature surpasses 80°C. This process is irreversible.
Electronic hazard
Do not bring magnets near a wallet, computer, or screen. The magnetic field can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
Do not give to children
NdFeB magnets are not suitable for play. Swallowing multiple magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a severe health hazard and necessitates urgent medical intervention.
Beware of splinters
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, meaning they are fragile like glass. Clashing of two magnets leads to them breaking into small pieces.
Keep away from electronics
GPS units and mobile phones are highly sensitive to magnetism. Direct contact with a powerful NdFeB magnet can ruin the sensors in your phone.
Mechanical processing
Drilling and cutting of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
