Strengths and weaknesses of neodymium magnets.
Benefits
- They do not lose power, even over nearly 10 years – the drop in lifting capacity is only ~1% (according to tests),
- Neodymium magnets remain exceptionally resistant to magnetic field loss caused by external interference,
- In other words, due to the reflective finish of gold, the element looks attractive,
- Magnets exhibit very high magnetic induction on the outer side,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the shape) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to freedom in constructing and the ability to adapt to specific needs,
- Key role in high-tech industry – they serve a role in computer drives, drive modules, precision medical tools, as well as technologically advanced constructions.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Weaknesses
- They are fragile upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth securing magnets in a protective case. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in power. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore when using outdoors, we suggest using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
- We suggest casing - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in creating threads inside the magnet and complex shapes.
- Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these magnets can be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which can limit application in large quantities
Holding force characteristics
Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameters – what it depends on?
- with the use of a yoke made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- possessing a thickness of min. 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
- with an ideally smooth contact surface
- with direct contact (without paint)
- for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- at standard ambient temperature
Magnet lifting force in use – key factors
- Space between magnet and steel – even a fraction of a millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by varnish or unevenness) significantly weakens the magnet efficiency, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the holding force drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Plate thickness – too thin sheet does not close the flux, causing part of the power to be lost to the other side.
- Plate material – mild steel attracts best. Alloy admixtures decrease magnetic properties and holding force.
- Surface condition – ground elements guarantee perfect abutment, which improves field saturation. Uneven metal reduce efficiency.
- Temperature – temperature increase causes a temporary drop of force. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was determined using a steel plate with a smooth surface of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under vertically applied force, in contrast under shearing force the holding force is lower. In addition, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the holding force.
Safe handling of neodymium magnets
Data carriers
Data protection: Strong magnets can ruin data carriers and delicate electronics (pacemakers, medical aids, mechanical watches).
Choking Hazard
These products are not suitable for play. Swallowing multiple magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a critical condition and necessitates immediate surgery.
Life threat
People with a pacemaker have to keep an absolute distance from magnets. The magnetic field can stop the operation of the life-saving device.
Material brittleness
Despite the nickel coating, neodymium is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into hazardous fragments.
Fire warning
Drilling and cutting of NdFeB material carries a risk of fire risk. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Keep away from electronics
A strong magnetic field interferes with the functioning of magnetometers in phones and navigation systems. Do not bring magnets near a device to prevent breaking the sensors.
Allergic reactions
It is widely known that the nickel plating (standard magnet coating) is a common allergen. For allergy sufferers, prevent touching magnets with bare hands or opt for versions in plastic housing.
Immense force
Exercise caution. Rare earth magnets attract from a distance and snap with massive power, often faster than you can move away.
Bodily injuries
Big blocks can smash fingers instantly. Never place your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.
Operating temperature
Keep cool. Neodymium magnets are susceptible to heat. If you need operation above 80°C, look for special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
