Other offers
Strengths and weaknesses of neodymium magnets.
Advantages
- Their power is maintained, and after around 10 years it decreases only by ~1% (theoretically),
- They possess excellent resistance to magnetic field loss due to external fields,
- Thanks to the metallic finish, the surface of nickel, gold-plated, or silver gives an aesthetic appearance,
- They show high magnetic induction at the operating surface, making them more effective,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their form) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- Thanks to the possibility of accurate shaping and adaptation to specialized solutions, neodymium magnets can be produced in a variety of geometric configurations, which expands the range of possible applications,
- Universal use in high-tech industry – they serve a role in magnetic memories, electric motors, diagnostic systems, also industrial machines.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they offer powerful magnetic field, making them ideal for precision applications
Cons
- They are fragile upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth securing magnets in a protective case. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in power. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material immune to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- Due to limitations in realizing threads and complex shapes in magnets, we recommend using casing - magnetic holder.
- Possible danger related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small elements of these devices can complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- With budget limitations the cost of neodymium magnets can be a barrier,
Pull force analysis
Detachment force of the magnet in optimal conditions – what it depends on?
- with the use of a yoke made of special test steel, ensuring maximum field concentration
- possessing a thickness of at least 10 mm to avoid saturation
- with a surface cleaned and smooth
- under conditions of no distance (metal-to-metal)
- under perpendicular force direction (90-degree angle)
- in stable room temperature
Practical aspects of lifting capacity – factors
- Distance – existence of any layer (paint, dirt, gap) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When slipping, the magnet holds significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Wall thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of generating force.
- Plate material – mild steel attracts best. Higher carbon content reduce magnetic permeability and holding force.
- Surface quality – the smoother and more polished the plate, the larger the contact zone and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness creates an air distance.
- Thermal environment – heating the magnet results in weakening of force. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Holding force was measured on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, whereas under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate lowers the load capacity.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Crushing force
Big blocks can smash fingers in a fraction of a second. Never place your hand between two strong magnets.
Respect the power
Be careful. Rare earth magnets attract from a distance and snap with massive power, often faster than you can move away.
Medical interference
Health Alert: Strong magnets can deactivate heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have electronic implants.
Protect data
Very strong magnetic fields can corrupt files on payment cards, HDDs, and storage devices. Stay away of min. 10 cm.
Precision electronics
A powerful magnetic field negatively affects the functioning of compasses in smartphones and navigation systems. Do not bring magnets near a device to prevent breaking the sensors.
Maximum temperature
Control the heat. Heating the magnet to high heat will ruin its properties and pulling force.
Magnets are brittle
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, which means they are very brittle. Impact of two magnets will cause them shattering into shards.
Swallowing risk
These products are not toys. Eating a few magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a severe health hazard and requires immediate surgery.
Warning for allergy sufferers
Warning for allergy sufferers: The nickel-copper-nickel coating consists of nickel. If skin irritation happens, cease working with magnets and use protective gear.
Dust explosion hazard
Powder created during machining of magnets is combustible. Avoid drilling into magnets unless you are an expert.
