Advantages and disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Advantages
- Their magnetic field is maintained, and after approximately 10 years it decreases only by ~1% (theoretically),
- They retain their magnetic properties even under strong external field,
- By covering with a lustrous coating of gold, the element has an proper look,
- Magnets have maximum magnetic induction on the working surface,
- Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, allowing for operation at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
- In view of the ability of free forming and customization to individualized projects, neodymium magnets can be modeled in a broad palette of geometric configurations, which increases their versatility,
- Key role in electronics industry – they are used in data components, motor assemblies, medical equipment, and other advanced devices.
- Thanks to efficiency per cm³, small magnets offer high operating force, in miniature format,
Weaknesses
- Susceptibility to cracking is one of their disadvantages. Upon strong impact they can break. We recommend keeping them in a steel housing, which not only secures them against impacts but also raises their durability
- Neodymium magnets lose force when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore when using outdoors, we advise using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- We suggest casing - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in creating threads inside the magnet and complex shapes.
- Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, small components of these products are able to complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Detachment force of the magnet in optimal conditions – what it depends on?
- using a base made of mild steel, serving as a ideal flux conductor
- possessing a massiveness of at least 10 mm to avoid saturation
- characterized by smoothness
- with total lack of distance (without paint)
- under perpendicular force direction (90-degree angle)
- at temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Practical lifting capacity: influencing factors
- Clearance – existence of any layer (rust, tape, gap) acts as an insulator, which reduces capacity rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – catalog parameter refers to pulling vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet holds significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Wall thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux passes through the material instead of generating force.
- Metal type – different alloys reacts the same. High carbon content worsen the interaction with the magnet.
- Surface condition – ground elements ensure maximum contact, which improves force. Rough surfaces reduce efficiency.
- Thermal conditions – neodymium magnets have a sensitivity to temperature. When it is hot they lose power, and in frost gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of optimal thickness, under perpendicular forces, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. In addition, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate lowers the load capacity.
Warnings
Operating temperature
Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) lose power when the temperature exceeds 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.
Eye protection
NdFeB magnets are sintered ceramics, which means they are fragile like glass. Clashing of two magnets will cause them shattering into shards.
Choking Hazard
Product intended for adults. Tiny parts pose a choking risk, causing severe trauma. Keep away from children and animals.
Serious injuries
Big blocks can crush fingers instantly. Never place your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.
Electronic devices
Device Safety: Neodymium magnets can ruin data carriers and sensitive devices (pacemakers, medical aids, mechanical watches).
Implant safety
For implant holders: Powerful magnets disrupt electronics. Keep at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.
Respect the power
Before starting, check safety instructions. Sudden snapping can break the magnet or hurt your hand. Think ahead.
GPS and phone interference
Navigation devices and mobile phones are highly susceptible to magnetism. Close proximity with a strong magnet can permanently damage the sensors in your phone.
Allergic reactions
Some people experience a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the standard coating for NdFeB magnets. Prolonged contact may cause a rash. We strongly advise use protective gloves.
Combustion hazard
Powder generated during cutting of magnets is combustible. Avoid drilling into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
