Strengths as well as weaknesses of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Benefits
- They do not lose strength, even over around ten years – the reduction in strength is only ~1% (theoretically),
- Magnets perfectly protect themselves against demagnetization caused by ambient magnetic noise,
- A magnet with a shiny gold surface is more attractive,
- Magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet remains very high,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are capable of working (depending on the form) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Due to the potential of precise molding and customization to individualized needs, magnetic components can be manufactured in a variety of shapes and sizes, which increases their versatility,
- Universal use in modern industrial fields – they are used in mass storage devices, electric drive systems, medical equipment, also multitasking production systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer strong magnetic field in small dimensions, which enables their usage in compact constructions
Weaknesses
- To avoid cracks under impact, we recommend using special steel housings. Such a solution secures the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- We warn that neodymium magnets can reduce their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we recommend our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- They rust in a humid environment. For use outdoors we suggest using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Limited possibility of creating nuts in the magnet and complex forms - preferred is cover - magnetic holder.
- Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, small elements of these magnets are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.
- With budget limitations the cost of neodymium magnets can be a barrier,
Pull force analysis
Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnet – what it depends on?
- on a block made of mild steel, effectively closing the magnetic flux
- with a thickness no less than 10 mm
- with an polished touching surface
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (surface-to-surface)
- during detachment in a direction vertical to the plane
- in neutral thermal conditions
Determinants of practical lifting force of a magnet
- Distance – the presence of foreign body (paint, tape, air) acts as an insulator, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Angle of force application – maximum parameter is available only during pulling at a 90° angle. The resistance to sliding of the magnet along the surface is typically several times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Wall thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of generating force.
- Steel grade – ideal substrate is high-permeability steel. Cast iron may generate lower lifting capacity.
- Base smoothness – the more even the surface, the larger the contact zone and stronger the hold. Unevenness acts like micro-gaps.
- Operating temperature – NdFeB sinters have a sensitivity to temperature. At higher temperatures they are weaker, and at low temperatures gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was carried out on a smooth plate of optimal thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, however under attempts to slide the magnet the holding force is lower. In addition, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate decreases the load capacity.
Precautions when working with neodymium magnets
Nickel allergy
Studies show that the nickel plating (standard magnet coating) is a potent allergen. If you have an allergy, prevent touching magnets with bare hands and select coated magnets.
Serious injuries
Watch your fingers. Two large magnets will snap together instantly with a force of several hundred kilograms, crushing anything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
Magnetic media
Do not bring magnets close to a wallet, computer, or screen. The magnetism can irreversibly ruin these devices and wipe information from cards.
Danger to the youngest
Absolutely store magnets away from children. Ingestion danger is significant, and the consequences of magnets clamping inside the body are tragic.
Powerful field
Be careful. Neodymium magnets act from a long distance and connect with huge force, often faster than you can react.
GPS Danger
Be aware: rare earth magnets generate a field that interferes with precision electronics. Keep a safe distance from your mobile, device, and GPS.
Heat warning
Standard neodymium magnets (grade N) lose magnetization when the temperature surpasses 80°C. This process is irreversible.
Flammability
Fire warning: Rare earth powder is highly flammable. Avoid machining magnets in home conditions as this risks ignition.
Danger to pacemakers
Warning for patients: Strong magnetic fields disrupt electronics. Maintain minimum 30 cm distance or request help to handle the magnets.
Shattering risk
Despite the nickel coating, neodymium is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Do not hit, as the magnet may shatter into hazardous fragments.
