Other offers
Pros and cons of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- They have constant strength, and over more than ten years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (in testing),
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by remarkably resistant to magnetic field loss caused by external field sources,
- Thanks to the smooth finish, the layer of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold, or silver gives an visually attractive appearance,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a powerful magnetic field – this is a distinguishing feature,
- Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, enabling action at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
- Possibility of exact modeling as well as adapting to defined applications,
- Fundamental importance in advanced technology sectors – they are utilized in HDD drives, motor assemblies, advanced medical instruments, also multitasking production systems.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they provide effective action, making them ideal for precision applications
Weaknesses
- They are prone to damage upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth securing magnets in special housings. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
- Neodymium magnets lose power when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
- They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we advise using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Limited possibility of making nuts in the magnet and complex forms - recommended is cover - magnetic holder.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets can be dangerous, in case of ingestion, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that small components of these products are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical in case of swallowing.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which can limit application in large quantities
Holding force characteristics
Breakaway strength of the magnet in ideal conditions – what it depends on?
- using a plate made of low-carbon steel, functioning as a circuit closing element
- whose transverse dimension is min. 10 mm
- characterized by lack of roughness
- with direct contact (no impurities)
- for force acting at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- in temp. approx. 20°C
Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors
- Distance – existence of any layer (paint, dirt, air) acts as an insulator, which lowers power steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Direction of force – maximum parameter is reached only during perpendicular pulling. The force required to slide of the magnet along the surface is typically several times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Steel thickness – insufficiently thick steel causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the flux to be lost to the other side.
- Material composition – not every steel reacts the same. Alloy additives weaken the attraction effect.
- Surface finish – ideal contact is possible only on polished steel. Any scratches and bumps reduce the real contact area, weakening the magnet.
- Temperature influence – hot environment weakens magnetic field. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Holding force was measured on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the lifting capacity.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Thermal limits
Monitor thermal conditions. Heating the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will ruin its magnetic structure and pulling force.
Cards and drives
Do not bring magnets close to a wallet, laptop, or screen. The magnetism can irreversibly ruin these devices and wipe information from cards.
Shattering risk
Watch out for shards. Magnets can explode upon uncontrolled impact, launching shards into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
Dust is flammable
Combustion risk: Neodymium dust is highly flammable. Do not process magnets in home conditions as this risks ignition.
Skin irritation risks
Medical facts indicate that the nickel plating (the usual finish) is a strong allergen. If your skin reacts to metals, prevent touching magnets with bare hands or select encased magnets.
Keep away from children
Strictly store magnets out of reach of children. Risk of swallowing is significant, and the consequences of magnets clamping inside the body are very dangerous.
Crushing force
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so great that it can cause hematomas, pinching, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
GPS and phone interference
Remember: neodymium magnets generate a field that interferes with precision electronics. Maintain a safe distance from your mobile, tablet, and GPS.
Pacemakers
Medical warning: Strong magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
Conscious usage
Before use, check safety instructions. Uncontrolled attraction can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.
