Advantages and disadvantages of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- Their magnetic field is durable, and after around 10 years it decreases only by ~1% (according to research),
- Magnets very well defend themselves against loss of magnetization caused by external fields,
- A magnet with a smooth nickel surface has an effective appearance,
- Neodymium magnets deliver maximum magnetic induction on a contact point, which increases force concentration,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can work (depending on the shape) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Possibility of individual modeling as well as optimizing to precise needs,
- Huge importance in modern industrial fields – they serve a role in mass storage devices, electric drive systems, precision medical tools, as well as industrial machines.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they provide effective action, making them ideal for precision applications
Weaknesses
- At strong impacts they can crack, therefore we advise placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in power. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets usually rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- We suggest casing - magnetic holder, due to difficulties in creating threads inside the magnet and complicated shapes.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. Additionally, small components of these devices can complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- Due to neodymium price, their price is relatively high,
Lifting parameters
Maximum magnetic pulling force – what affects it?
- with the contact of a sheet made of special test steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- whose thickness equals approx. 10 mm
- with a surface perfectly flat
- without the slightest air gap between the magnet and steel
- during pulling in a direction vertical to the plane
- at temperature room level
Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors
- Clearance – existence of any layer (paint, tape, gap) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Load vector – maximum parameter is obtained only during perpendicular pulling. The shear force of the magnet along the surface is usually several times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Steel thickness – insufficiently thick plate causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the power to be wasted into the air.
- Plate material – mild steel gives the best results. Alloy admixtures lower magnetic properties and lifting capacity.
- Base smoothness – the more even the surface, the better the adhesion and higher the lifting capacity. Roughness acts like micro-gaps.
- Thermal environment – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of force. Check the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity was assessed with the use of a steel plate with a smooth surface of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, whereas under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate reduces the load capacity.
H&S for magnets
Maximum temperature
Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) lose power when the temperature exceeds 80°C. Damage is permanent.
Hand protection
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so great that it can cause hematomas, pinching, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
Material brittleness
Despite the nickel coating, the material is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Do not hit, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Allergy Warning
Nickel alert: The Ni-Cu-Ni coating contains nickel. If an allergic reaction occurs, cease working with magnets and wear gloves.
Caution required
Handle magnets consciously. Their huge power can surprise even experienced users. Be vigilant and do not underestimate their force.
Do not give to children
These products are not intended for children. Swallowing a few magnets can lead to them attracting across intestines, which constitutes a severe health hazard and requires immediate surgery.
GPS Danger
Remember: neodymium magnets produce a field that disrupts precision electronics. Keep a separation from your phone, device, and GPS.
Machining danger
Fire hazard: Rare earth powder is highly flammable. Do not process magnets in home conditions as this risks ignition.
Safe distance
Do not bring magnets near a wallet, laptop, or screen. The magnetism can irreversibly ruin these devices and wipe information from cards.
Health Danger
Patients with a pacemaker should keep an absolute distance from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the functioning of the implant.
