Pros as well as cons of rare earth magnets.
Strengths
- They retain full power for around 10 years – the drop is just ~1% (based on simulations),
- Neodymium magnets prove to be exceptionally resistant to magnetic field loss caused by external magnetic fields,
- The use of an elegant coating of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to present itself better,
- Magnetic induction on the working layer of the magnet turns out to be maximum,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can work (depending on the shape) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Thanks to freedom in designing and the capacity to adapt to individual projects,
- Versatile presence in advanced technology sectors – they find application in mass storage devices, electromotive mechanisms, advanced medical instruments, also complex engineering applications.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer strong magnetic field in compact dimensions, which allows their use in miniature devices
Limitations
- To avoid cracks under impact, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- Neodymium magnets demagnetize when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore when using outdoors, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- Due to limitations in producing threads and complex shapes in magnets, we recommend using casing - magnetic mount.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets pose a threat, when accidentally swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child safety. Additionally, small elements of these magnets are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Lifting parameters
Highest magnetic holding force – what contributes to it?
- on a block made of mild steel, optimally conducting the magnetic field
- whose thickness is min. 10 mm
- characterized by lack of roughness
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (surface-to-surface)
- for force acting at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- at ambient temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice
- Clearance – existence of any layer (rust, tape, air) acts as an insulator, which reduces capacity rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Direction of force – highest force is available only during perpendicular pulling. The resistance to sliding of the magnet along the surface is standardly several times lower (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Wall thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Magnetic flux passes through the material instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Material type – the best choice is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may attract less.
- Surface quality – the smoother and more polished the surface, the larger the contact zone and higher the lifting capacity. Roughness creates an air distance.
- Temperature influence – high temperature reduces magnetic field. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.
Lifting capacity testing was carried out on a smooth plate of optimal thickness, under perpendicular forces, in contrast under parallel forces the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate reduces the load capacity.
Safe handling of neodymium magnets
Shattering risk
Despite metallic appearance, the material is delicate and not impact-resistant. Do not hit, as the magnet may shatter into hazardous fragments.
GPS Danger
A strong magnetic field interferes with the functioning of compasses in phones and navigation systems. Maintain magnets near a smartphone to prevent damaging the sensors.
Safe distance
Device Safety: Neodymium magnets can ruin data carriers and sensitive devices (heart implants, hearing aids, timepieces).
Operating temperature
Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) lose magnetization when the temperature goes above 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.
Adults only
Neodymium magnets are not toys. Accidental ingestion of several magnets may result in them pinching intestinal walls, which constitutes a critical condition and requires urgent medical intervention.
Avoid contact if allergic
Allergy Notice: The nickel-copper-nickel coating consists of nickel. If skin irritation happens, immediately stop handling magnets and wear gloves.
Handling guide
Before use, check safety instructions. Uncontrolled attraction can break the magnet or injure your hand. Think ahead.
Implant safety
Patients with a ICD have to keep an large gap from magnets. The magnetic field can stop the functioning of the implant.
Crushing risk
Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so great that it can cause hematomas, pinching, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
Machining danger
Drilling and cutting of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Neodymium dust reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
