Advantages and disadvantages of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- They do not lose strength, even over around 10 years – the reduction in lifting capacity is only ~1% (theoretically),
- They feature excellent resistance to magnetic field loss when exposed to external fields,
- The use of an refined coating of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to be more visually attractive,
- Magnets are characterized by maximum magnetic induction on the working surface,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their form) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- Possibility of detailed forming and adjusting to atypical requirements,
- Fundamental importance in electronics industry – they are utilized in hard drives, motor assemblies, diagnostic systems, also multitasking production systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in compact dimensions, which enables their usage in miniature devices
Weaknesses
- To avoid cracks under impact, we recommend using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- NdFeB magnets lose power when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore during using outdoors, we suggest using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
- Limited ability of creating threads in the magnet and complicated shapes - preferred is casing - magnetic holder.
- Possible danger related to microscopic parts of magnets pose a threat, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, small elements of these products are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical in case of swallowing.
- With mass production the cost of neodymium magnets is economically unviable,
Pull force analysis
Breakaway strength of the magnet in ideal conditions – what it depends on?
- with the contact of a sheet made of special test steel, ensuring maximum field concentration
- whose transverse dimension equals approx. 10 mm
- characterized by lack of roughness
- with direct contact (no coatings)
- under axial force vector (90-degree angle)
- at conditions approx. 20°C
Determinants of lifting force in real conditions
- Gap (between the magnet and the plate), as even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a reduction in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or dirt).
- Force direction – remember that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the holding force drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
- Substrate thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Thin sheet restricts the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material type – ideal substrate is high-permeability steel. Cast iron may attract less.
- Smoothness – ideal contact is obtained only on polished steel. Any scratches and bumps reduce the real contact area, reducing force.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase causes a temporary drop of induction. Check the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was measured by applying a steel plate with a smooth surface of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under parallel forces the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate decreases the holding force.
H&S for magnets
Caution required
Exercise caution. Rare earth magnets act from a distance and snap with huge force, often quicker than you can react.
Permanent damage
Control the heat. Exposing the magnet to high heat will destroy its properties and strength.
Fire risk
Machining of NdFeB material poses a fire hazard. Neodymium dust reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Keep away from computers
Do not bring magnets close to a purse, computer, or screen. The magnetic field can irreversibly ruin these devices and wipe information from cards.
Keep away from electronics
GPS units and mobile phones are extremely susceptible to magnetism. Close proximity with a strong magnet can permanently damage the sensors in your phone.
Beware of splinters
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, meaning they are prone to chipping. Collision of two magnets leads to them breaking into small pieces.
ICD Warning
Life threat: Neodymium magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Stay away if you have electronic implants.
Swallowing risk
Adult use only. Tiny parts pose a choking risk, leading to severe trauma. Store away from kids and pets.
Crushing risk
Watch your fingers. Two large magnets will join instantly with a force of massive weight, destroying everything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
Metal Allergy
Studies show that nickel (the usual finish) is a common allergen. If you have an allergy, prevent direct skin contact or choose coated magnets.
