Advantages as well as disadvantages of neodymium magnets.
Strengths
- They retain full power for almost ten years – the loss is just ~1% (in theory),
- Neodymium magnets prove to be remarkably resistant to demagnetization caused by external interference,
- In other words, due to the metallic finish of silver, the element gains a professional look,
- Magnets possess very high magnetic induction on the surface,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their shape) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- In view of the potential of accurate forming and adaptation to individualized needs, NdFeB magnets can be manufactured in a broad palette of geometric configurations, which makes them more universal,
- Key role in innovative solutions – they are commonly used in HDD drives, electromotive mechanisms, medical devices, also modern systems.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, occupying minimum space,
Weaknesses
- Susceptibility to cracking is one of their disadvantages. Upon strong impact they can fracture. We advise keeping them in a steel housing, which not only secures them against impacts but also raises their durability
- Neodymium magnets decrease their strength under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore while using outdoors, we advise using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
- Limited possibility of producing nuts in the magnet and complex forms - recommended is a housing - magnet mounting.
- Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, tiny parts of these magnets are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- With large orders the cost of neodymium magnets can be a barrier,
Holding force characteristics
Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnet – what it depends on?
- on a plate made of mild steel, perfectly concentrating the magnetic flux
- possessing a thickness of min. 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
- with an ground contact surface
- without any air gap between the magnet and steel
- during pulling in a direction vertical to the plane
- at temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Determinants of practical lifting force of a magnet
- Clearance – the presence of foreign body (paint, tape, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Pull-off angle – note that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the holding force drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Wall thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux penetrates through instead of generating force.
- Steel type – low-carbon steel gives the best results. Higher carbon content decrease magnetic properties and holding force.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces ensure maximum contact, which improves field saturation. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
- Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a negative temperature coefficient. At higher temperatures they are weaker, and in frost gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on a smooth plate of optimal thickness, under perpendicular forces, however under parallel forces the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate decreases the load capacity.
Warnings
Safe operation
Be careful. Rare earth magnets attract from a distance and connect with huge force, often quicker than you can move away.
Safe distance
Equipment safety: Neodymium magnets can ruin payment cards and delicate electronics (heart implants, hearing aids, timepieces).
Warning for heart patients
People with a pacemaker should maintain an large gap from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the operation of the implant.
Do not overheat magnets
Keep cool. NdFeB magnets are sensitive to heat. If you need resistance above 80°C, look for HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Warning for allergy sufferers
Allergy Notice: The Ni-Cu-Ni coating contains nickel. If an allergic reaction happens, immediately stop handling magnets and wear gloves.
Keep away from children
NdFeB magnets are not intended for children. Accidental ingestion of a few magnets can lead to them connecting inside the digestive tract, which poses a severe health hazard and necessitates immediate surgery.
Magnetic interference
Navigation devices and mobile phones are highly sensitive to magnetism. Direct contact with a powerful NdFeB magnet can ruin the sensors in your phone.
Bone fractures
Mind your fingers. Two large magnets will snap together instantly with a force of several hundred kilograms, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!
Fire warning
Powder produced during grinding of magnets is flammable. Do not drill into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Shattering risk
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, which means they are very brittle. Impact of two magnets will cause them breaking into shards.
