How strong a magnet do I need for magnet fishing?
Our search magnets are rated between 32 kg and 680 kg of pull force. The rating is measured as a straight, perpendicular pull on thick, clean steel — in a river you almost never pull that way, so treat it as a figure for comparing models rather than a promise. For a first magnet, mid-range models around 300 kg are easier to handle than the heaviest ones, which are simply hard to lift once they grab a submerged object.
What rope and shackle should I pair with the magnet?
Match the whole chain, not just the magnet. Our ø10 mm rope is rated at 1592 kg and the M10 shackle at 320 kg, so with a 310 kg magnet the shackle is the limiting part. Whatever you buy, check the rating of every component separately and take the lowest one as the rating of the set. The knot at the eye is usually weaker than the rope itself.
What is the difference between a single-sided and a double-sided fishing magnet?
A single-sided magnet holds on one face only, so it has to land the right way round. A double-sided one grabs from either face, which matters when you throw it into moving water and cannot control how it lands. The trade-off is weight and price for the same nominal pull force — the F200 GOLD DUAL, for instance, is rated at 601 kg against 310 kg for the single-sided F200 GOLD.
Does the pull force rating apply underwater?
Water itself is not the problem — it is not magnetic and barely changes the force. What changes it is everything else: silt and rust between the magnet and the find, a curved or thin surface instead of a flat plate, and a pull that comes at an angle rather than straight off. Expect a fraction of the catalogue figure in real conditions, and choose the mounting point and coating with that in mind.

Disadvantages

Problematic aspects of neodymium magnets and ways of using them
  • Brittleness is one of their disadvantages. Upon strong impact they can fracture. We advise keeping them in a strong case, which not only protects them against impacts but also increases their durability
  • NdFeB magnets demagnetize when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore when using outdoors, we recommend using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
  • Limited possibility of producing threads in the magnet and complex shapes - recommended is a housing - magnet mounting.
  • Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. Additionally, small components of these products can disrupt the diagnostic process medical when they are in the body.
  • Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications

Lifting parameters

Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnetwhat contributes to it?

The load parameter shown concerns the peak performance, measured under laboratory conditions, specifically:
  • using a plate made of high-permeability steel, acting as a ideal flux conductor
  • with a cross-section no less than 10 mm
  • characterized by smoothness
  • under conditions of ideal adhesion (metal-to-metal)
  • for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
  • at room temperature

What influences lifting capacity in practice

Effective lifting capacity impacted by working environment parameters, mainly (from most important):
  • Gap (between the magnet and the plate), because even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a decrease in force by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or dirt).
  • Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the capacity drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
  • Substrate thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
  • Plate material – mild steel attracts best. Alloy admixtures lower magnetic properties and holding force.
  • Surface finish – full contact is obtained only on polished steel. Any scratches and bumps create air cushions, reducing force.
  • Temperature – temperature increase causes a temporary drop of induction. Check the maximum operating temperature for a given model.

Lifting capacity was assessed using a steel plate with a smooth surface of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under shearing force the holding force is lower. In addition, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.

Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
Power loss in heat

Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) lose power when the temperature goes above 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.

Caution required

Use magnets with awareness. Their huge power can shock even experienced users. Stay alert and respect their power.

Serious injuries

Large magnets can break fingers instantly. Do not put your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.

Nickel allergy

Studies show that the nickel plating (the usual finish) is a strong allergen. For allergy sufferers, refrain from direct skin contact or select coated magnets.

Magnetic interference

Remember: neodymium magnets generate a field that confuses precision electronics. Maintain a separation from your mobile, tablet, and navigation systems.

Fire risk

Powder created during machining of magnets is flammable. Do not drill into magnets unless you are an expert.

Safe distance

Avoid bringing magnets near a purse, laptop, or TV. The magnetic field can irreversibly ruin these devices and erase data from cards.

Do not give to children

NdFeB magnets are not suitable for play. Accidental ingestion of several magnets can lead to them attracting across intestines, which poses a critical condition and necessitates urgent medical intervention.

Pacemakers

For implant holders: Strong magnetic fields affect medical devices. Keep at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.

Beware of splinters

Despite the nickel coating, the material is delicate and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into sharp, dangerous pieces.
