Advantages and disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Benefits
- They do not lose magnetism, even over nearly 10 years – the decrease in power is only ~1% (according to tests),
- Magnets effectively resist against demagnetization caused by foreign field sources,
- By using a reflective layer of silver, the element gains an professional look,
- Neodymium magnets ensure maximum magnetic induction on a small area, which increases force concentration,
- Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, allowing for action at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
- Possibility of accurate forming and modifying to complex requirements,
- Universal use in advanced technology sectors – they are used in computer drives, electric motors, medical devices, as well as other advanced devices.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in small dimensions, which allows their use in miniature devices
Limitations
- To avoid cracks under impact, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- Neodymium magnets decrease their power under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore while using outdoors, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- Due to limitations in realizing threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we recommend using cover - magnetic holder.
- Potential hazard resulting from small fragments of magnets can be dangerous, in case of ingestion, which becomes key in the context of child safety. Furthermore, small elements of these devices are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical in case of swallowing.
- With mass production the cost of neodymium magnets is economically unviable,
Holding force characteristics
Maximum holding power of the magnet – what it depends on?
- on a block made of structural steel, perfectly concentrating the magnetic flux
- possessing a thickness of min. 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
- characterized by even structure
- without any air gap between the magnet and steel
- for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- at standard ambient temperature
Key elements affecting lifting force
- Gap (between the magnet and the plate), since even a very small clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a decrease in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or dirt).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet holds significantly lower power (often approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Plate thickness – too thin sheet does not close the flux, causing part of the flux to be lost into the air.
- Steel type – low-carbon steel attracts best. Higher carbon content decrease magnetic properties and lifting capacity.
- Surface finish – ideal contact is obtained only on polished steel. Rough texture reduce the real contact area, reducing force.
- Thermal environment – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of induction. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was determined by applying a polished steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate reduces the load capacity.
Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
Implant safety
Patients with a pacemaker should maintain an safe separation from magnets. The magnetism can stop the functioning of the implant.
Do not underestimate power
Handle with care. Rare earth magnets act from a distance and snap with huge force, often quicker than you can move away.
This is not a toy
Neodymium magnets are not suitable for play. Eating several magnets may result in them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a direct threat to life and requires urgent medical intervention.
Hand protection
Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so immense that it can result in blood blisters, crushing, and broken bones. Use thick gloves.
Risk of cracking
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, which means they are very brittle. Clashing of two magnets will cause them shattering into shards.
Keep away from electronics
GPS units and mobile phones are extremely susceptible to magnetism. Close proximity with a powerful NdFeB magnet can permanently damage the sensors in your phone.
Heat sensitivity
Watch the temperature. Exposing the magnet to high heat will permanently weaken its properties and pulling force.
Avoid contact if allergic
Nickel alert: The nickel-copper-nickel coating contains nickel. If an allergic reaction appears, immediately stop handling magnets and use protective gear.
Electronic hazard
Intense magnetic fields can corrupt files on credit cards, HDDs, and other magnetic media. Maintain a gap of min. 10 cm.
Fire warning
Fire warning: Neodymium dust is highly flammable. Avoid machining magnets without safety gear as this risks ignition.
