Advantages and disadvantages of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- They virtually do not lose strength, because even after ten years the performance loss is only ~1% (based on calculations),
- Magnets very well protect themselves against demagnetization caused by external fields,
- The use of an metallic finish of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to look better,
- Neodymium magnets create maximum magnetic induction on a small area, which allows for strong attraction,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by extremely high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and are able to act (depending on the shape) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Thanks to modularity in constructing and the ability to adapt to specific needs,
- Huge importance in future technologies – they are used in mass storage devices, electromotive mechanisms, precision medical tools, also modern systems.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they generate large force, making them ideal for precision applications
Cons
- To avoid cracks under impact, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- NdFeB magnets lose strength when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- Limited possibility of producing threads in the magnet and complex shapes - preferred is a housing - magnetic holder.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, when accidentally swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, small components of these magnets can complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- Due to expensive raw materials, their price is relatively high,
Pull force analysis
Highest magnetic holding force – what contributes to it?
- with the use of a yoke made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- whose thickness reaches at least 10 mm
- with an polished touching surface
- without any air gap between the magnet and steel
- under vertical force vector (90-degree angle)
- at standard ambient temperature
Determinants of practical lifting force of a magnet
- Clearance – the presence of foreign body (rust, dirt, air) acts as an insulator, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the holding force drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Thin sheet restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material composition – different alloys attracts identically. Alloy additives worsen the interaction with the magnet.
- Base smoothness – the more even the plate, the larger the contact zone and stronger the hold. Unevenness acts like micro-gaps.
- Thermal factor – high temperature reduces pulling force. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.
Lifting capacity testing was performed on a smooth plate of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, however under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the holding force.
Precautions when working with NdFeB magnets
Compass and GPS
A powerful magnetic field negatively affects the functioning of compasses in smartphones and GPS navigation. Do not bring magnets near a smartphone to prevent damaging the sensors.
Keep away from computers
Do not bring magnets near a purse, computer, or TV. The magnetic field can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
Do not overheat magnets
Avoid heat. NdFeB magnets are sensitive to heat. If you need operation above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Conscious usage
Exercise caution. Rare earth magnets attract from a distance and connect with massive power, often quicker than you can move away.
Implant safety
Life threat: Strong magnets can deactivate heart devices and defibrillators. Stay away if you have electronic implants.
Mechanical processing
Powder created during machining of magnets is self-igniting. Do not drill into magnets unless you are an expert.
Pinching danger
Watch your fingers. Two powerful magnets will join immediately with a force of several hundred kilograms, destroying everything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
Magnet fragility
Despite the nickel coating, neodymium is delicate and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into hazardous fragments.
Warning for allergy sufferers
Allergy Notice: The nickel-copper-nickel coating consists of nickel. If redness happens, immediately stop working with magnets and use protective gear.
This is not a toy
Adult use only. Tiny parts pose a choking risk, leading to intestinal necrosis. Keep away from kids and pets.
