Other offers
Strengths and weaknesses of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Benefits
- They do not lose magnetism, even over nearly ten years – the reduction in power is only ~1% (according to tests),
- They are extremely resistant to demagnetization induced by external disturbances,
- Thanks to the shiny finish, the coating of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold, or silver gives an professional appearance,
- Neodymium magnets ensure maximum magnetic induction on a their surface, which ensures high operational effectiveness,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can work (depending on the shape) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Thanks to freedom in forming and the capacity to customize to unusual requirements,
- Fundamental importance in innovative solutions – they are utilized in mass storage devices, drive modules, medical devices, and complex engineering applications.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in small dimensions, which allows their use in compact constructions
Cons
- They are fragile upon heavy impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets using a steel holder. Such protection not only protects the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
- Neodymium magnets lose force when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- They oxidize in a humid environment. For use outdoors we advise using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Due to limitations in realizing nuts and complicated forms in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic holder.
- Possible danger related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. Additionally, small elements of these devices are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets have a higher price than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which increases costs of application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Maximum magnetic pulling force – what affects it?
- using a sheet made of low-carbon steel, acting as a magnetic yoke
- with a thickness of at least 10 mm
- characterized by smoothness
- under conditions of no distance (metal-to-metal)
- during detachment in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at room temperature
Magnet lifting force in use – key factors
- Clearance – existence of any layer (paint, dirt, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which lowers power steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits significantly lower power (often approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Substrate thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Thin sheet limits the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material type – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Cast iron may generate lower lifting capacity.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces ensure maximum contact, which improves force. Rough surfaces reduce efficiency.
- Thermal factor – high temperature weakens magnetic field. Too high temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.
Holding force was tested on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, however under parallel forces the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Precautions when working with neodymium magnets
Warning for allergy sufferers
Certain individuals experience a contact allergy to nickel, which is the typical protective layer for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact can result in dermatitis. We recommend wear safety gloves.
Medical interference
For implant holders: Strong magnetic fields disrupt electronics. Keep minimum 30 cm distance or request help to handle the magnets.
Fire warning
Fire warning: Rare earth powder is highly flammable. Avoid machining magnets without safety gear as this risks ignition.
Data carriers
Do not bring magnets near a wallet, computer, or screen. The magnetism can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
Finger safety
Risk of injury: The pulling power is so great that it can cause hematomas, pinching, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
This is not a toy
These products are not suitable for play. Accidental ingestion of several magnets may result in them attracting across intestines, which constitutes a critical condition and requires immediate surgery.
Impact on smartphones
GPS units and mobile phones are highly sensitive to magnetism. Close proximity with a strong magnet can ruin the sensors in your phone.
Magnets are brittle
Despite the nickel coating, the material is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Do not hit, as the magnet may crumble into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Operating temperature
Keep cool. Neodymium magnets are sensitive to temperature. If you need resistance above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Safe operation
Handle with care. Neodymium magnets act from a long distance and connect with huge force, often faster than you can move away.
