Advantages as well as disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Advantages
- They retain full power for nearly ten years – the drop is just ~1% (based on simulations),
- They are resistant to demagnetization induced by external disturbances,
- In other words, due to the aesthetic layer of gold, the element becomes visually attractive,
- They show high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which affects their effectiveness,
- Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, allowing for functioning at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
- Possibility of detailed forming and adjusting to complex requirements,
- Significant place in future technologies – they are commonly used in HDD drives, brushless drives, diagnostic systems, also other advanced devices.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in tiny dimensions, which makes them useful in small systems
Disadvantages
- They are prone to damage upon heavy impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth securing magnets using a steel holder. Such protection not only protects the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
- Neodymium magnets decrease their strength under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore during using outdoors, we advise using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- We recommend casing - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in realizing threads inside the magnet and complex shapes.
- Possible danger to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. It is also worth noting that small elements of these devices are able to complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets are more expensive than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which can limit application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Magnetic strength at its maximum – what affects it?
- with the application of a sheet made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- whose thickness equals approx. 10 mm
- with a surface cleaned and smooth
- without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- for force acting at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
- in neutral thermal conditions
Key elements affecting lifting force
- Space between surfaces – every millimeter of separation (caused e.g. by veneer or unevenness) significantly weakens the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Force direction – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet exhibits much less (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Plate thickness – too thin steel does not accept the full field, causing part of the flux to be escaped to the other side.
- Material composition – not every steel reacts the same. Alloy additives weaken the attraction effect.
- Smoothness – ideal contact is obtained only on smooth steel. Any scratches and bumps create air cushions, weakening the magnet.
- Thermal environment – temperature increase results in weakening of force. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was carried out on a smooth plate of optimal thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the load capacity.
Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
Risk of cracking
Neodymium magnets are ceramic materials, meaning they are fragile like glass. Clashing of two magnets leads to them cracking into small pieces.
Power loss in heat
Do not overheat. Neodymium magnets are sensitive to heat. If you require resistance above 80°C, ask us about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Electronic hazard
Intense magnetic fields can destroy records on payment cards, hard drives, and storage devices. Maintain a gap of at least 10 cm.
Skin irritation risks
A percentage of the population experience a sensitization to nickel, which is the common plating for NdFeB magnets. Frequent touching might lead to an allergic reaction. We recommend wear protective gloves.
Handling guide
Handle magnets with awareness. Their powerful strength can surprise even experienced users. Stay alert and respect their force.
Compass and GPS
An intense magnetic field negatively affects the functioning of compasses in phones and GPS navigation. Do not bring magnets near a smartphone to prevent damaging the sensors.
Implant safety
For implant holders: Powerful magnets disrupt medical devices. Keep at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.
Hand protection
Pinching hazard: The attraction force is so immense that it can cause blood blisters, crushing, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.
Flammability
Drilling and cutting of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Danger to the youngest
Product intended for adults. Small elements can be swallowed, leading to intestinal necrosis. Store out of reach of children and animals.
