Strengths as well as weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Pros
- They do not lose power, even during nearly 10 years – the decrease in lifting capacity is only ~1% (theoretically),
- Neodymium magnets remain exceptionally resistant to magnetic field loss caused by magnetic disturbances,
- A magnet with a shiny gold surface is more attractive,
- Neodymium magnets generate maximum magnetic induction on a their surface, which ensures high operational effectiveness,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are able to function (depending on the shape) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Due to the ability of free forming and customization to custom projects, neodymium magnets can be modeled in a variety of forms and dimensions, which increases their versatility,
- Versatile presence in modern industrial fields – they are commonly used in HDD drives, electromotive mechanisms, medical devices, as well as multitasking production systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in compact dimensions, which allows their use in miniature devices
Disadvantages
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we suggest using special steel housings. Such a solution secures the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- NdFeB magnets demagnetize when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore while using outdoors, we advise using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
- Limited ability of creating threads in the magnet and complicated shapes - preferred is a housing - mounting mechanism.
- Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small elements of these magnets are able to complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- Due to expensive raw materials, their price is higher than average,
Pull force analysis
Maximum holding power of the magnet – what affects it?
- on a block made of structural steel, effectively closing the magnetic field
- whose thickness is min. 10 mm
- with an ideally smooth contact surface
- without the slightest air gap between the magnet and steel
- under perpendicular force vector (90-degree angle)
- at ambient temperature room level
Practical lifting capacity: influencing factors
- Clearance – existence of any layer (paint, tape, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet holds much less (often approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Chemical composition of the base – mild steel gives the best results. Alloy admixtures decrease magnetic permeability and lifting capacity.
- Surface condition – ground elements guarantee perfect abutment, which improves force. Uneven metal weaken the grip.
- Temperature – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of induction. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was performed on a smooth plate of optimal thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, whereas under shearing force the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
Warnings
Fire risk
Dust created during machining of magnets is flammable. Avoid drilling into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Metal Allergy
Certain individuals experience a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the common plating for NdFeB magnets. Prolonged contact might lead to dermatitis. We strongly advise wear protective gloves.
Precision electronics
An intense magnetic field negatively affects the functioning of compasses in phones and GPS navigation. Keep magnets close to a device to avoid breaking the sensors.
Product not for children
These products are not intended for children. Swallowing a few magnets may result in them attracting across intestines, which poses a severe health hazard and necessitates immediate surgery.
Permanent damage
Watch the temperature. Heating the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will permanently weaken its magnetic structure and strength.
Magnetic media
Data protection: Neodymium magnets can damage data carriers and delicate electronics (pacemakers, medical aids, timepieces).
Life threat
Patients with a ICD have to keep an safe separation from magnets. The magnetic field can disrupt the operation of the implant.
Respect the power
Before starting, read the rules. Sudden snapping can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.
Material brittleness
Despite metallic appearance, the material is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Physical harm
Mind your fingers. Two powerful magnets will join instantly with a force of several hundred kilograms, destroying everything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
