Frequently asked questions

How strong a magnet do I need for magnet fishing?
Our search magnets are rated between 32 kg and 680 kg of pull force. The rating is measured as a straight, perpendicular pull on thick, clean steel — in a river you almost never pull that way, so treat it as a figure for comparing models rather than a promise. For a first magnet, mid-range models around 300 kg are easier to handle than the heaviest ones, which are simply hard to lift once they grab a submerged object.
What rope and shackle should I pair with the magnet?
Match the whole chain, not just the magnet. Our ø10 mm rope is rated at 1592 kg and the M10 shackle at 320 kg, so with a 310 kg magnet the shackle is the limiting part. Whatever you buy, check the rating of every component separately and take the lowest one as the rating of the set. The knot at the eye is usually weaker than the rope itself.
What is the difference between a single-sided and a double-sided fishing magnet?
A single-sided magnet holds on one face only, so it has to land the right way round. A double-sided one grabs from either face, which matters when you throw it into moving water and cannot control how it lands. The trade-off is weight and price for the same nominal pull force — the F200 GOLD DUAL, for instance, is rated at 601 kg against 310 kg for the single-sided F200 GOLD.
Does the pull force rating apply underwater?
Water itself is not the problem — it is not magnetic and barely changes the force. What changes it is everything else: silt and rust between the magnet and the find, a curved or thin surface instead of a flat plate, and a pull that comes at an angle rather than straight off. Expect a fraction of the catalogue figure in real conditions, and choose the mounting point and coating with that in mind.

Don't be fooled by amateur online tests – go for certified quality and specific parameters that guarantee success:

  • 📏 Magnet thickness in the casing (min. 10mm) – This is what matters most! Thin magnets are weak. Thanks to the 1cm thickness of N52 neodymium, your magnet "sees" metal even through thick rust and mud.
  • 🛡️ Armored protection (Black Epoxy) – Forget about rust. This coating doesn't chip when hitting rocks and protects the magnet in water much better than regular nickel, which fails quickly.
  • 🧲 Eyelets that don't steal power – Made of special non-magnetic steel, so they don't stick to the magnet and don't block the force. Important: mount only one eyelet at a time! Using 3 at once is a mistake that weakens the magnet.
  • 🧶 Certified rope (min. 8mm) – You gain the certainty that your gear won't stay at the bottom. It's thick and comfortable, so it doesn't cut your fingers when pulling out heavy scrap metal.
  • 🚀 Our advantage: We are the only ones combining the strongest N52 neodymium (10mm thick) with non-magnetic eyelets. This is real power and durability you won't find anywhere else.

Magnet pull force

Magnetic Induction

Other proposals

For underwater searches, we recommend specialized holders from the GOLD series, designed for working in difficult conditions. This specific magnet ensures a laboratory lifting capacity of up to 380.00 kg, which translates into high effectiveness in water. For beginners, we recommend lighter single-sided models (F80-F200), for advanced users - heavier double-sided (Two-Side) ones.
Double-sided holders (Two-Side) have two active magnetic surfaces and two mounting holes. The side eyelet ensures the magnet doesn't stand sideways or "on edge" during pulling. Single-sided magnets are usually lighter and cheaper but less effective for long throws.
This construction protects the brittle neodymium from direct impact against stones and the bottom. Despite solid construction, neodymium is a brittle material and can chip upon very strong impact (e.g., against concrete). After each fishing trip, we recommend rinsing the magnet with fresh water and drying it.
Check the product title and description to see if you are buying just the magnet or the XL set. A full set usually contains: magnet, polypropylene rope with appropriate strength, protective gloves, hook, and carabiner. Using thread glue is crucial to not lose the magnet in silt.
This force applies to perfect adherence with the entire surface to a smooth, clean steel plate with a min. thickness of 20mm. In a river, objects are often rusty, silted, or irregular in shape (e.g., pipes), which drastically reduces grip strength. Therefore, to pull objects weighing 10kg from the water, a magnet with a capacity of 200-300kg is often needed.
If you find a dangerous object (unexploded ordnance) or an antique, you have a legal obligation to report it to appropriate services (Police, conservator). Magnet fishing is an eco-friendly hobby if you clean the river from trash and scrap.
Unlike other brands, Dhit does not cut corners on materials, which translates into a better results during treasure hunting.
The unique way of mounting the magnet in the protective cup builds a unified structure that dampens shocks while working on difficult, rocky bottoms.
Many sellers employ a tactic by advertising the pull force tested exclusively on the vertical mount. The Dhit brand focuses on full transparency by stating the actual capabilities of the gear, so you can be sure during real field work.
{Unlike anonymous sellers, Dhit provides expert advice and instant warranty help, which gives peace of mind after the purchase. Every product is individually inspected before shipping, which guarantees that you the set will be of the highest quality.

Pros and cons of neodymium magnets.

Advantages

Besides their exceptional magnetic power, neodymium magnets offer the following advantages:
  • They do not lose magnetism, even after nearly ten years – the drop in lifting capacity is only ~1% (based on measurements),
  • Neodymium magnets are characterized by remarkably resistant to loss of magnetic properties caused by external field sources,
  • Thanks to the smooth finish, the coating of nickel, gold-plated, or silver-plated gives an modern appearance,
  • Neodymium magnets achieve maximum magnetic induction on a small area, which ensures high operational effectiveness,
  • Neodymium magnets are characterized by extremely high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can function (depending on the shape) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
  • Considering the option of flexible shaping and customization to individualized projects, magnetic components can be modeled in a wide range of forms and dimensions, which expands the range of possible applications,
  • Key role in advanced technology sectors – they serve a role in computer drives, brushless drives, precision medical tools, and other advanced devices.
  • Compactness – despite small sizes they provide effective action, making them ideal for precision applications

Weaknesses

Problematic aspects of neodymium magnets and proposals for their use:
  • They are prone to damage upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets in a protective case. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
  • When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in power. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
  • Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture, in case of application outdoors
  • Limited ability of making threads in the magnet and complicated shapes - preferred is a housing - mounting mechanism.
  • Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. Additionally, small components of these magnets are able to complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
  • Due to neodymium price, their price exceeds standard values,

Holding force characteristics

Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameterswhat contributes to it?

Breakaway force was defined for optimal configuration, taking into account:
  • with the use of a sheet made of low-carbon steel, ensuring maximum field concentration
  • with a thickness minimum 10 mm
  • with a plane free of scratches
  • under conditions of gap-free contact (metal-to-metal)
  • for force applied at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
  • in temp. approx. 20°C

Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors

Effective lifting capacity impacted by working environment parameters, mainly (from most important):
  • Space between surfaces – even a fraction of a millimeter of separation (caused e.g. by veneer or unevenness) significantly weakens the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
  • Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits much less (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
  • Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
  • Steel type – mild steel attracts best. Higher carbon content reduce magnetic permeability and lifting capacity.
  • Surface structure – the smoother and more polished the surface, the better the adhesion and stronger the hold. Roughness creates an air distance.
  • Thermal factor – high temperature reduces pulling force. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.

Lifting capacity was measured using a steel plate with a smooth surface of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular detachment force, however under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.

Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
Bone fractures

Large magnets can smash fingers in a fraction of a second. Do not put your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.

Heat warning

Avoid heat. Neodymium magnets are susceptible to heat. If you need resistance above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).

Do not give to children

Strictly keep magnets away from children. Ingestion danger is high, and the consequences of magnets clamping inside the body are life-threatening.

GPS Danger

Be aware: rare earth magnets produce a field that interferes with sensitive sensors. Keep a safe distance from your mobile, device, and navigation systems.

Fire risk

Combustion risk: Neodymium dust is explosive. Avoid machining magnets in home conditions as this risks ignition.

Respect the power

Before starting, check safety instructions. Sudden snapping can break the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.

Metal Allergy

Certain individuals suffer from a sensitization to nickel, which is the typical protective layer for neodymium magnets. Frequent touching can result in dermatitis. We strongly advise wear safety gloves.

ICD Warning

Patients with a ICD must keep an absolute distance from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the operation of the implant.

Risk of cracking

Despite the nickel coating, neodymium is delicate and not impact-resistant. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.

Keep away from computers

Device Safety: Strong magnets can ruin payment cards and sensitive devices (heart implants, hearing aids, timepieces).
