How strong a magnet do I need for magnet fishing?
Our search magnets are rated between 32 kg and 680 kg of pull force. The rating is measured as a straight, perpendicular pull on thick, clean steel — in a river you almost never pull that way, so treat it as a figure for comparing models rather than a promise. For a first magnet, mid-range models around 300 kg are easier to handle than the heaviest ones, which are simply hard to lift once they grab a submerged object.
What rope and shackle should I pair with the magnet?
Match the whole chain, not just the magnet. Our ø10 mm rope is rated at 1592 kg and the M10 shackle at 320 kg, so with a 310 kg magnet the shackle is the limiting part. Whatever you buy, check the rating of every component separately and take the lowest one as the rating of the set. The knot at the eye is usually weaker than the rope itself.
What is the difference between a single-sided and a double-sided fishing magnet?
A single-sided magnet holds on one face only, so it has to land the right way round. A double-sided one grabs from either face, which matters when you throw it into moving water and cannot control how it lands. The trade-off is weight and price for the same nominal pull force — the F200 GOLD DUAL, for instance, is rated at 601 kg against 310 kg for the single-sided F200 GOLD.
Does the pull force rating apply underwater?
Water itself is not the problem — it is not magnetic and barely changes the force. What changes it is everything else: silt and rust between the magnet and the find, a curved or thin surface instead of a flat plate, and a pull that comes at an angle rather than straight off. Expect a fraction of the catalogue figure in real conditions, and choose the mounting point and coating with that in mind.

Limitations

Drawbacks and weaknesses of neodymium magnets and proposals for their use:
  • They are fragile upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth securing magnets in a protective case. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also improves its resistance to damage
  • Neodymium magnets decrease their force under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their force. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
  • Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material immune to moisture, when using outdoors
  • Limited possibility of creating threads in the magnet and complex shapes - recommended is casing - mounting mechanism.
  • Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these products are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical when they are in the body.

Holding force characteristics

Highest magnetic holding forcewhat it depends on?

Breakaway force was defined for the most favorable conditions, assuming:
  • using a plate made of mild steel, functioning as a ideal flux conductor
  • with a thickness no less than 10 mm
  • with an ideally smooth contact surface
  • without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
  • for force acting at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
  • at temperature room level

Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice

In practice, the actual holding force results from a number of factors, presented from the most important:
  • Gap (between the magnet and the plate), since even a very small clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) results in a reduction in force by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or dirt).
  • Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the capacity drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
  • Wall thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of generating force.
  • Material type – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may generate lower lifting capacity.
  • Surface structure – the more even the surface, the better the adhesion and higher the lifting capacity. Roughness acts like micro-gaps.
  • Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a negative temperature coefficient. At higher temperatures they are weaker, and at low temperatures gain strength (up to a certain limit).

Lifting capacity was determined by applying a polished steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under vertically applied force, however under parallel forces the lifting capacity is smaller. In addition, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate decreases the holding force.
