How strong a magnet do I need for magnet fishing?
Our search magnets are rated between 32 kg and 680 kg of pull force. The rating is measured as a straight, perpendicular pull on thick, clean steel — in a river you almost never pull that way, so treat it as a figure for comparing models rather than a promise. For a first magnet, mid-range models around 300 kg are easier to handle than the heaviest ones, which are simply hard to lift once they grab a submerged object.
What rope and shackle should I pair with the magnet?
Match the whole chain, not just the magnet. Our ø10 mm rope is rated at 1592 kg and the M10 shackle at 320 kg, so with a 310 kg magnet the shackle is the limiting part. Whatever you buy, check the rating of every component separately and take the lowest one as the rating of the set. The knot at the eye is usually weaker than the rope itself.
What is the difference between a single-sided and a double-sided fishing magnet?
A single-sided magnet holds on one face only, so it has to land the right way round. A double-sided one grabs from either face, which matters when you throw it into moving water and cannot control how it lands. The trade-off is weight and price for the same nominal pull force — the F200 GOLD DUAL, for instance, is rated at 601 kg against 310 kg for the single-sided F200 GOLD.
Does the pull force rating apply underwater?
Water itself is not the problem — it is not magnetic and barely changes the force. What changes it is everything else: silt and rust between the magnet and the find, a curved or thin surface instead of a flat plate, and a pull that comes at an angle rather than straight off. Weaknesses

Disadvantages of NdFeB magnets:
  • To avoid cracks under impact, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
  • Neodymium magnets decrease their strength under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
  • When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
  • We recommend casing - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in realizing nuts inside the magnet and complicated forms.
  • Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, when accidentally swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, small components of these devices are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.
  • High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which increases costs of application in large quantities

Holding force characteristics

Breakaway strength of the magnet in ideal conditionswhat it depends on?

The declared magnet strength concerns the peak performance, measured under optimal environment, namely:
  • on a block made of structural steel, optimally conducting the magnetic flux
  • with a thickness no less than 10 mm
  • with an ideally smooth touching surface
  • with total lack of distance (without impurities)
  • during detachment in a direction vertical to the plane
  • at ambient temperature room level

Impact of factors on magnetic holding capacity in practice

Real force is affected by working environment parameters, including (from priority):
  • Gap (betwixt the magnet and the plate), since even a very small distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) results in a decrease in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, rust or dirt).
  • Force direction – note that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the holding force drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
  • Steel thickness – too thin plate causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the flux to be lost into the air.
  • Material composition – not every steel attracts identically. High carbon content worsen the interaction with the magnet.
  • Plate texture – smooth surfaces ensure maximum contact, which improves field saturation. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
  • Operating temperature – NdFeB sinters have a sensitivity to temperature. At higher temperatures they are weaker, and at low temperatures they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).

Lifting capacity was measured by applying a smooth steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, whereas under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. Moreover, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the holding force.

Warnings
Material brittleness

Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, meaning they are fragile like glass. Clashing of two magnets leads to them shattering into small pieces.

Flammability

Drilling and cutting of neodymium magnets poses a fire risk. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.

Electronic devices

Equipment safety: Strong magnets can ruin payment cards and delicate electronics (pacemakers, medical aids, timepieces).

Physical harm

Watch your fingers. Two large magnets will snap together instantly with a force of several hundred kilograms, destroying everything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!

Conscious usage

Exercise caution. Rare earth magnets attract from a distance and snap with huge force, often quicker than you can react.

Heat sensitivity

Avoid heat. NdFeB magnets are sensitive to heat. If you need resistance above 80°C, ask us about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
