Strengths as well as weaknesses of neodymium magnets.
Strengths
- They virtually do not lose power, because even after 10 years the decline in efficiency is only ~1% (according to literature),
- Magnets effectively defend themselves against demagnetization caused by external fields,
- In other words, due to the reflective surface of gold, the element gains a professional look,
- They are known for high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which affects their effectiveness,
- Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, enabling operation at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
- Possibility of individual creating as well as adjusting to complex conditions,
- Versatile presence in modern industrial fields – they are utilized in magnetic memories, electric drive systems, advanced medical instruments, as well as multitasking production systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in compact dimensions, which makes them useful in miniature devices
Cons
- To avoid cracks under impact, we recommend using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose their power under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their force. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as magnets in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- We suggest casing - magnetic holder, due to difficulties in creating threads inside the magnet and complex shapes.
- Potential hazard related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. Additionally, small elements of these devices can complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is a significant factor to consider compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Lifting parameters
Maximum lifting force for a neodymium magnet – what affects it?
- with the application of a yoke made of special test steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- whose transverse dimension reaches at least 10 mm
- with a surface free of scratches
- without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- at temperature room level
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Distance (betwixt the magnet and the plate), because even a very small clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a decrease in force by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, rust or dirt).
- Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the capacity drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Plate thickness – insufficiently thick steel causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the power to be lost to the other side.
- Material composition – not every steel attracts identically. Alloy additives worsen the interaction with the magnet.
- Surface quality – the smoother and more polished the plate, the larger the contact zone and stronger the hold. Roughness creates an air distance.
- Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a sensitivity to temperature. At higher temperatures they are weaker, and at low temperatures gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Holding force was measured on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Safety rules for work with NdFeB magnets
Handling rules
Use magnets consciously. Their powerful strength can surprise even professionals. Stay alert and respect their power.
Serious injuries
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so great that it can cause hematomas, pinching, and broken bones. Protective gloves are recommended.
Magnetic interference
Navigation devices and smartphones are extremely susceptible to magnetism. Direct contact with a powerful NdFeB magnet can permanently damage the internal compass in your phone.
Life threat
For implant holders: Powerful magnets affect electronics. Keep at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.
Flammability
Combustion risk: Rare earth powder is highly flammable. Do not process magnets in home conditions as this risks ignition.
Eye protection
Neodymium magnets are ceramic materials, meaning they are prone to chipping. Clashing of two magnets leads to them shattering into small pieces.
Skin irritation risks
Medical facts indicate that the nickel plating (standard magnet coating) is a potent allergen. For allergy sufferers, avoid touching magnets with bare hands or select versions in plastic housing.
Magnetic media
Equipment safety: Strong magnets can ruin payment cards and sensitive devices (heart implants, hearing aids, mechanical watches).
Operating temperature
Keep cool. NdFeB magnets are sensitive to temperature. If you require operation above 80°C, ask us about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Do not give to children
These products are not suitable for play. Swallowing a few magnets can lead to them attracting across intestines, which constitutes a direct threat to life and requires immediate surgery.
