Strengths and weaknesses of neodymium magnets.
Pros
- They do not lose strength, even over nearly 10 years – the decrease in strength is only ~1% (according to tests),
- They maintain their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
- Thanks to the reflective finish, the coating of nickel, gold-plated, or silver-plated gives an elegant appearance,
- They show high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which increases their power,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can work (depending on the shape) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Possibility of custom modeling as well as adjusting to atypical requirements,
- Significant place in advanced technology sectors – they find application in computer drives, electric drive systems, medical equipment, also modern systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in tiny dimensions, which makes them useful in compact constructions
Cons
- To avoid cracks under impact, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose force when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material stable to moisture, when using outdoors
- Limited ability of making threads in the magnet and complicated shapes - preferred is casing - mounting mechanism.
- Possible danger related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, small components of these products are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- Due to complex production process, their price is higher than average,
Pull force analysis
Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameters – what it depends on?
- with the application of a sheet made of low-carbon steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- with a thickness minimum 10 mm
- with a surface perfectly flat
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (surface-to-surface)
- under axial force direction (90-degree angle)
- at conditions approx. 20°C
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Distance (between the magnet and the metal), as even a microscopic distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) results in a reduction in force by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or debris).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to pulling vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet holds much less (often approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux passes through the material instead of generating force.
- Steel grade – the best choice is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may generate lower lifting capacity.
- Base smoothness – the more even the surface, the larger the contact zone and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness acts like micro-gaps.
- Thermal conditions – neodymium magnets have a sensitivity to temperature. When it is hot they lose power, and in frost they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was performed on plates with a smooth surface of optimal thickness, under perpendicular forces, in contrast under shearing force the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate reduces the load capacity.
Warnings
Avoid contact if allergic
Medical facts indicate that nickel (the usual finish) is a common allergen. If you have an allergy, avoid direct skin contact and choose encased magnets.
Impact on smartphones
GPS units and smartphones are highly susceptible to magnetism. Close proximity with a strong magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
Data carriers
Powerful magnetic fields can corrupt files on credit cards, HDDs, and other magnetic media. Stay away of at least 10 cm.
Hand protection
Watch your fingers. Two powerful magnets will join instantly with a force of massive weight, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!
Shattering risk
Protect your eyes. Magnets can explode upon violent connection, ejecting shards into the air. Eye protection is mandatory.
Mechanical processing
Dust produced during grinding of magnets is self-igniting. Do not drill into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Caution required
Be careful. Neodymium magnets act from a distance and snap with huge force, often faster than you can react.
Demagnetization risk
Keep cool. Neodymium magnets are sensitive to temperature. If you need resistance above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Do not give to children
Always store magnets away from children. Ingestion danger is high, and the effects of magnets clamping inside the body are tragic.
Life threat
Medical warning: Strong magnets can turn off pacemakers and defibrillators. Stay away if you have medical devices.
