Pros as well as cons of rare earth magnets.
Strengths
- They virtually do not lose strength, because even after 10 years the performance loss is only ~1% (according to literature),
- They feature excellent resistance to weakening of magnetic properties due to external fields,
- The use of an elegant coating of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to present itself better,
- Magnetic induction on the top side of the magnet is very high,
- Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, enabling operation at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
- In view of the ability of free forming and customization to custom requirements, neodymium magnets can be created in a broad palette of shapes and sizes, which makes them more universal,
- Huge importance in future technologies – they find application in HDD drives, drive modules, advanced medical instruments, and technologically advanced constructions.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in small dimensions, which makes them useful in compact constructions
Disadvantages
- To avoid cracks under impact, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose power when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Limited ability of producing threads in the magnet and complicated shapes - preferred is cover - magnet mounting.
- Potential hazard resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, tiny parts of these devices can disrupt the diagnostic process medical when they are in the body.
- With budget limitations the cost of neodymium magnets is economically unviable,
Lifting parameters
Maximum magnetic pulling force – what contributes to it?
- using a plate made of mild steel, acting as a ideal flux conductor
- possessing a thickness of min. 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
- with an ideally smooth contact surface
- under conditions of no distance (metal-to-metal)
- under perpendicular force direction (90-degree angle)
- at standard ambient temperature
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Distance – the presence of foreign body (rust, dirt, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – remember that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the holding force drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
- Metal thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Magnetic flux penetrates through instead of generating force.
- Plate material – low-carbon steel attracts best. Alloy admixtures lower magnetic properties and lifting capacity.
- Surface condition – ground elements ensure maximum contact, which increases field saturation. Rough surfaces reduce efficiency.
- Temperature – temperature increase causes a temporary drop of induction. Check the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was determined by applying a smooth steel plate of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under vertically applied force, however under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. Moreover, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Safe handling of neodymium magnets
Magnet fragility
NdFeB magnets are ceramic materials, which means they are prone to chipping. Impact of two magnets will cause them shattering into shards.
Maximum temperature
Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) lose magnetization when the temperature surpasses 80°C. Damage is permanent.
Serious injuries
Protect your hands. Two powerful magnets will join immediately with a force of massive weight, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!
Medical interference
Patients with a ICD must keep an safe separation from magnets. The magnetic field can stop the functioning of the life-saving device.
Precision electronics
Note: neodymium magnets generate a field that confuses precision electronics. Maintain a separation from your phone, tablet, and navigation systems.
Respect the power
Exercise caution. Rare earth magnets attract from a distance and snap with massive power, often faster than you can move away.
Allergic reactions
A percentage of the population experience a contact allergy to Ni, which is the common plating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact may cause an allergic reaction. We strongly advise use safety gloves.
Cards and drives
Intense magnetic fields can erase data on credit cards, hard drives, and other magnetic media. Maintain a gap of min. 10 cm.
Dust is flammable
Fire warning: Neodymium dust is highly flammable. Avoid machining magnets without safety gear as this may cause fire.
Choking Hazard
Adult use only. Tiny parts pose a choking risk, leading to severe trauma. Keep away from kids and pets.
