Frequently asked questions

How much will a magnetic holder hold in practice?
The catalogue value assumes full contact with smooth steel at least 10 mm thick and a perpendicular pull. Thinner sheet, paint, rust and surface irregularities reduce it considerably: on 1 mm sheet about half remains. Lifting and vertical mounting call for an additional safety margin.
Will a holder work on stainless steel?
Not on austenitic grades 304 and 316 — they are effectively non-magnetic. It will not work on aluminium, copper or brass either. Those materials need a mechanical gripper.
Which coating for which conditions?
Nickel-copper-nickel (NiCuNi) is the standard and covers most applications. Epoxy is used for damp environments and outdoor work, zinc is sufficient for dry interiors. Holders in a steel housing or in rubber also protect the magnet against impact.

The protruding thread allows instant screwing of a lamp or holder using a nut. It is a safe and durable mounting without drilling holes in the bodywork.
The magnet is tightly sealed with rubber, which protects it from water, road salt, mud, and corrosion. This is the best, professional solution for mounting on a vehicle roof.
Rubberized holders are the safest choice for painted surfaces. However, it is worth remembering to wipe the roof of dust and sand before mounting so that it does not get under the magnet.
The magnet has a permanently built-in stud with a metric thread (usually M4, M6, or M8). The stud is an integral part of the steel base and cannot be unscrewed.
Thanks to the multi-pole system (Multi-Pole), force is concentrated at the surface, giving a strong grip. Model UMGGZ 43x6 [M6] GZ / N38 is adapted to hold elements at road speeds if you choose the right number of mounting points.

Pros as well as cons of rare earth magnets.

Benefits

Apart from their superior power, neodymium magnets have these key benefits:
  • They have unchanged lifting capacity, and over more than 10 years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
  • They show high resistance to demagnetization induced by external disturbances,
  • Thanks to the elegant finish, the plating of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold-plated, or silver gives an visually attractive appearance,
  • Neodymium magnets create maximum magnetic induction on a small area, which increases force concentration,
  • Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, enabling functioning at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
  • Possibility of individual creating as well as adapting to atypical applications,
  • Key role in advanced technology sectors – they are utilized in hard drives, electric drive systems, advanced medical instruments, also modern systems.
  • Thanks to concentrated force, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,

Cons

Problematic aspects of neodymium magnets: tips and applications.
  • To avoid cracks under impact, we suggest using special steel housings. Such a solution secures the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
  • We warn that neodymium magnets can lose their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we suggest our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
  • They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we advise using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
  • We recommend a housing - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in creating nuts inside the magnet and complex forms.
  • Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, small components of these magnets can be problematic in diagnostics medical in case of swallowing.
  • Due to neodymium price, their price exceeds standard values,

Holding force characteristics

Maximum holding power of the magnet – what affects it?

Breakaway force is the result of a measurement for optimal configuration, assuming:
  • on a plate made of mild steel, optimally conducting the magnetic field
  • possessing a thickness of minimum 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
  • characterized by lack of roughness
  • without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
  • under axial application of breakaway force (90-degree angle)
  • in neutral thermal conditions

Determinants of practical lifting force of a magnet

Effective lifting capacity is affected by specific conditions, such as (from priority):
  • Space between magnet and steel – every millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by varnish or unevenness) drastically reduces the magnet efficiency, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
  • Pull-off angle – note that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the capacity drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
  • Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Paper-thin metal limits the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
  • Steel grade – the best choice is pure iron steel. Hardened steels may have worse magnetic properties.
  • Surface finish – full contact is possible only on smooth steel. Rough texture create air cushions, weakening the magnet.
  • Temperature influence – hot environment reduces magnetic field. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently damage the magnet.

Lifting capacity testing was carried out on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, whereas under parallel forces the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate decreases the holding force.

Safety rules for work with NdFeB magnets
Warning for allergy sufferers

Some people experience a sensitization to Ni, which is the common plating for NdFeB magnets. Frequent touching might lead to dermatitis. We recommend wear protective gloves.

Protect data

Avoid bringing magnets near a wallet, laptop, or screen. The magnetism can irreversibly ruin these devices and erase data from cards.

Implant safety

Health Alert: Strong magnets can deactivate pacemakers and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.

Protective goggles

Beware of splinters. Magnets can explode upon violent connection, launching shards into the air. We recommend safety glasses.

Crushing risk

Large magnets can crush fingers in a fraction of a second. Never place your hand betwixt two strong magnets.

Do not overheat magnets

Monitor thermal conditions. Heating the magnet to high heat will destroy its magnetic structure and pulling force.

GPS Danger

Navigation devices and smartphones are extremely sensitive to magnetic fields. Direct contact with a powerful NdFeB magnet can decalibrate the internal compass in your phone.

Fire risk

Machining of neodymium magnets carries a risk of fire hazard. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.

Do not give to children

Adult use only. Small elements pose a choking risk, causing serious injuries. Keep out of reach of kids and pets.

Powerful field

Before use, check safety instructions. Uncontrolled attraction can break the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.
