Strengths and weaknesses of neodymium magnets.
Strengths
- Their strength is durable, and after around 10 years it drops only by ~1% (according to research),
- They do not lose their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
- The use of an shiny layer of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to present itself better,
- Magnets possess maximum magnetic induction on the working surface,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their shape) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- Considering the option of free molding and customization to individualized needs, neodymium magnets can be manufactured in a wide range of shapes and sizes, which makes them more universal,
- Versatile presence in modern technologies – they serve a role in HDD drives, drive modules, precision medical tools, also other advanced devices.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they generate large force, making them ideal for precision applications
Weaknesses
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose their strength under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain stability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we advise using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material immune to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- Due to limitations in realizing nuts and complicated forms in magnets, we recommend using a housing - magnetic mechanism.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, small elements of these devices are able to complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which can limit application in large quantities
Holding force characteristics
Breakaway strength of the magnet in ideal conditions – what affects it?
- on a plate made of structural steel, perfectly concentrating the magnetic field
- possessing a massiveness of minimum 10 mm to avoid saturation
- with an polished touching surface
- under conditions of gap-free contact (surface-to-surface)
- under perpendicular force direction (90-degree angle)
- at ambient temperature room level
Magnet lifting force in use – key factors
- Clearance – the presence of foreign body (rust, tape, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – note that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the holding force drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Thin sheet limits the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Metal type – different alloys reacts the same. Alloy additives weaken the interaction with the magnet.
- Surface condition – ground elements ensure maximum contact, which improves field saturation. Rough surfaces reduce efficiency.
- Temperature – temperature increase results in weakening of force. Check the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of optimal thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, whereas under parallel forces the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
H&S for magnets
Avoid contact if allergic
A percentage of the population have a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the common plating for NdFeB magnets. Prolonged contact may cause dermatitis. It is best to wear protective gloves.
Choking Hazard
Strictly keep magnets away from children. Choking hazard is significant, and the effects of magnets clamping inside the body are very dangerous.
GPS and phone interference
Note: neodymium magnets produce a field that interferes with precision electronics. Keep a safe distance from your phone, device, and GPS.
Safe distance
Equipment safety: Neodymium magnets can ruin data carriers and delicate electronics (heart implants, hearing aids, mechanical watches).
Immense force
Use magnets consciously. Their powerful strength can surprise even professionals. Plan your moves and do not underestimate their force.
Implant safety
Individuals with a heart stimulator must keep an safe separation from magnets. The magnetic field can disrupt the functioning of the life-saving device.
Beware of splinters
NdFeB magnets are ceramic materials, meaning they are prone to chipping. Collision of two magnets leads to them breaking into small pieces.
Bone fractures
Watch your fingers. Two powerful magnets will snap together instantly with a force of several hundred kilograms, crushing anything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
Do not drill into magnets
Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Neodymium dust oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Power loss in heat
Monitor thermal conditions. Exposing the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will destroy its magnetic structure and pulling force.
