Strengths as well as weaknesses of neodymium magnets.
Strengths
- Their magnetic field is maintained, and after approximately 10 years it decreases only by ~1% (theoretically),
- They feature excellent resistance to weakening of magnetic properties when exposed to external magnetic sources,
- Thanks to the elegant finish, the surface of nickel, gold-plated, or silver-plated gives an clean appearance,
- Magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet is maximum,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are able to function (depending on the form) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Thanks to modularity in designing and the ability to adapt to specific needs,
- Key role in electronics industry – they are used in mass storage devices, electric drive systems, medical devices, as well as industrial machines.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in compact dimensions, which allows their use in miniature devices
Disadvantages
- Brittleness is one of their disadvantages. Upon intense impact they can break. We recommend keeping them in a special holder, which not only protects them against impacts but also increases their durability
- Neodymium magnets decrease their strength under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- They oxidize in a humid environment. For use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Due to limitations in producing threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic mechanism.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, in case of ingestion, which gains importance in the context of child safety. Furthermore, tiny parts of these magnets can be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is a significant factor to consider compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Lifting parameters
Breakaway strength of the magnet in ideal conditions – what contributes to it?
- using a plate made of low-carbon steel, functioning as a ideal flux conductor
- whose transverse dimension equals approx. 10 mm
- with an polished touching surface
- without any air gap between the magnet and steel
- during pulling in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at conditions approx. 20°C
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Air gap (between the magnet and the plate), because even a microscopic clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) results in a decrease in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, rust or dirt).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When slipping, the magnet holds significantly lower power (often approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Paper-thin metal restricts the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material type – ideal substrate is high-permeability steel. Hardened steels may attract less.
- Base smoothness – the smoother and more polished the plate, the larger the contact zone and stronger the hold. Unevenness creates an air distance.
- Temperature influence – high temperature weakens pulling force. Too high temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Lifting capacity testing was carried out on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under perpendicular forces, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate lowers the holding force.
H&S for magnets
Sensitization to coating
A percentage of the population suffer from a sensitization to Ni, which is the standard coating for NdFeB magnets. Extended handling can result in skin redness. We suggest use protective gloves.
Finger safety
Protect your hands. Two large magnets will join immediately with a force of several hundred kilograms, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!
Protective goggles
Protect your eyes. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, launching sharp fragments into the air. Wear goggles.
Product not for children
Neodymium magnets are not suitable for play. Swallowing a few magnets may result in them attracting across intestines, which poses a severe health hazard and necessitates immediate surgery.
Precision electronics
An intense magnetic field disrupts the functioning of compasses in smartphones and navigation systems. Keep magnets close to a smartphone to avoid damaging the sensors.
Keep away from computers
Do not bring magnets near a purse, computer, or TV. The magnetic field can destroy these devices and wipe information from cards.
Heat sensitivity
Watch the temperature. Exposing the magnet to high heat will destroy its properties and strength.
Flammability
Drilling and cutting of NdFeB material carries a risk of fire risk. Neodymium dust reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Respect the power
Use magnets with awareness. Their huge power can shock even professionals. Plan your moves and do not underestimate their power.
Medical interference
Patients with a ICD have to maintain an safe separation from magnets. The magnetism can disrupt the operation of the life-saving device.
