Advantages and disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Benefits
- Their magnetic field remains stable, and after approximately ten years it decreases only by ~1% (according to research),
- Neodymium magnets are exceptionally resistant to loss of magnetic properties caused by external interference,
- A magnet with a shiny nickel surface looks better,
- Magnetic induction on the top side of the magnet turns out to be maximum,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets are capable of operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to versatility in forming and the ability to customize to unusual requirements,
- Significant place in modern technologies – they serve a role in HDD drives, electric motors, diagnostic systems, also industrial machines.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in tiny dimensions, which enables their usage in miniature devices
Limitations
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we suggest using special steel housings. Such a solution secures the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- We warn that neodymium magnets can lose their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we suggest our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore when using outdoors, we advise using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- Due to limitations in realizing threads and complex shapes in magnets, we recommend using a housing - magnetic mechanism.
- Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets can be dangerous, in case of ingestion, which becomes key in the context of child safety. Additionally, tiny parts of these products are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets are more expensive than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Maximum magnetic pulling force – what it depends on?
- with the contact of a yoke made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- possessing a thickness of minimum 10 mm to avoid saturation
- with a surface free of scratches
- without any clearance between the magnet and steel
- under vertical force direction (90-degree angle)
- in neutral thermal conditions
Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors
- Distance (betwixt the magnet and the plate), since even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a drastic drop in force by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or dirt).
- Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the capacity drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Steel thickness – insufficiently thick sheet does not close the flux, causing part of the flux to be escaped to the other side.
- Metal type – not every steel reacts the same. High carbon content worsen the attraction effect.
- Surface quality – the smoother and more polished the plate, the better the adhesion and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness creates an air distance.
- Temperature influence – hot environment reduces pulling force. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Lifting capacity testing was carried out on plates with a smooth surface of optimal thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. In addition, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the holding force.
Safe handling of neodymium magnets
Magnet fragility
NdFeB magnets are sintered ceramics, meaning they are prone to chipping. Clashing of two magnets leads to them cracking into small pieces.
Magnetic interference
A powerful magnetic field negatively affects the functioning of magnetometers in smartphones and navigation systems. Keep magnets near a smartphone to prevent damaging the sensors.
Serious injuries
Watch your fingers. Two large magnets will join instantly with a force of massive weight, destroying everything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
Implant safety
Medical warning: Neodymium magnets can turn off pacemakers and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
Data carriers
Avoid bringing magnets near a wallet, computer, or TV. The magnetic field can permanently damage these devices and erase data from cards.
Nickel coating and allergies
Certain individuals have a sensitization to nickel, which is the typical protective layer for NdFeB magnets. Frequent touching can result in a rash. It is best to use protective gloves.
Mechanical processing
Powder produced during cutting of magnets is combustible. Do not drill into magnets unless you are an expert.
No play value
Strictly keep magnets out of reach of children. Choking hazard is high, and the consequences of magnets clamping inside the body are very dangerous.
Do not underestimate power
Handle with care. Rare earth magnets attract from a distance and connect with huge force, often faster than you can move away.
Power loss in heat
Regular neodymium magnets (grade N) lose power when the temperature surpasses 80°C. This process is irreversible.
