Pros and cons of neodymium magnets.
Strengths
- They retain attractive force for almost ten years – the loss is just ~1% (based on simulations),
- They do not lose their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
- Thanks to the shiny finish, the coating of nickel, gold-plated, or silver gives an elegant appearance,
- Neodymium magnets create maximum magnetic induction on a small surface, which increases force concentration,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets are capable of operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- In view of the possibility of flexible shaping and customization to custom projects, magnetic components can be modeled in a broad palette of forms and dimensions, which expands the range of possible applications,
- Significant place in electronics industry – they find application in HDD drives, electromotive mechanisms, medical devices, and industrial machines.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in small dimensions, which enables their usage in small systems
Disadvantages
- At very strong impacts they can crack, therefore we advise placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- We warn that neodymium magnets can lose their power at high temperatures. To prevent this, we advise our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- They rust in a humid environment. For use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- We suggest cover - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in producing threads inside the magnet and complicated shapes.
- Possible danger to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, if swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, small elements of these products are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical in case of swallowing.
- Due to expensive raw materials, their price is relatively high,
Holding force characteristics
Detachment force of the magnet in optimal conditions – what it depends on?
- with the application of a sheet made of low-carbon steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- whose thickness reaches at least 10 mm
- with a plane cleaned and smooth
- without any clearance between the magnet and steel
- for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- at temperature room level
Key elements affecting lifting force
- Distance (betwixt the magnet and the plate), as even a very small clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) results in a decrease in force by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, corrosion or dirt).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits much less (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Plate thickness – too thin steel does not accept the full field, causing part of the power to be lost into the air.
- Metal type – different alloys reacts the same. Alloy additives weaken the interaction with the magnet.
- Base smoothness – the smoother and more polished the surface, the larger the contact zone and stronger the hold. Unevenness creates an air distance.
- Temperature influence – high temperature reduces magnetic field. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Lifting capacity was determined using a smooth steel plate of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the lifting capacity is smaller. In addition, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Precision electronics
GPS units and smartphones are extremely susceptible to magnetism. Close proximity with a strong magnet can decalibrate the sensors in your phone.
Permanent damage
Regular neodymium magnets (grade N) lose magnetization when the temperature exceeds 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.
Metal Allergy
Studies show that nickel (standard magnet coating) is a common allergen. For allergy sufferers, prevent touching magnets with bare hands or choose coated magnets.
Pacemakers
Life threat: Neodymium magnets can turn off pacemakers and defibrillators. Stay away if you have electronic implants.
Caution required
Before use, read the rules. Uncontrolled attraction can break the magnet or injure your hand. Think ahead.
Do not give to children
Strictly keep magnets away from children. Choking hazard is high, and the effects of magnets clamping inside the body are fatal.
Fire warning
Dust created during grinding of magnets is flammable. Avoid drilling into magnets unless you are an expert.
Bone fractures
Big blocks can smash fingers in a fraction of a second. Do not put your hand between two attracting surfaces.
Material brittleness
Protect your eyes. Magnets can fracture upon violent connection, launching shards into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
Electronic hazard
Data protection: Neodymium magnets can ruin data carriers and delicate electronics (pacemakers, medical aids, timepieces).
