Pros and cons of neodymium magnets.
Benefits
- They have stable power, and over around 10 years their performance decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
- Magnets effectively defend themselves against loss of magnetization caused by external fields,
- By using a decorative coating of silver, the element acquires an elegant look,
- They are known for high magnetic induction at the operating surface, making them more effective,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and are able to act (depending on the shape) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Thanks to modularity in shaping and the ability to adapt to unusual requirements,
- Universal use in future technologies – they serve a role in data components, drive modules, advanced medical instruments, and industrial machines.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in small dimensions, which makes them useful in small systems
Disadvantages
- They are fragile upon heavy impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets in a protective case. Such protection not only protects the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in power. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. For applications outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as magnets in rubber or plastics, which secure oxidation as well as corrosion.
- Due to limitations in realizing nuts and complicated forms in magnets, we recommend using casing - magnetic mechanism.
- Possible danger related to microscopic parts of magnets can be dangerous, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small components of these devices can be problematic in diagnostics medical in case of swallowing.
- With budget limitations the cost of neodymium magnets can be a barrier,
Lifting parameters
Breakaway strength of the magnet in ideal conditions – what contributes to it?
- on a plate made of structural steel, optimally conducting the magnetic field
- with a cross-section of at least 10 mm
- with an polished contact surface
- under conditions of gap-free contact (metal-to-metal)
- for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- at conditions approx. 20°C
Practical lifting capacity: influencing factors
- Clearance – existence of any layer (rust, tape, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Loading method – catalog parameter refers to pulling vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet holds much less (often approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Thin sheet restricts the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Metal type – not every steel attracts identically. Alloy additives weaken the attraction effect.
- Surface condition – ground elements guarantee perfect abutment, which improves force. Rough surfaces reduce efficiency.
- Thermal factor – hot environment weakens magnetic field. Too high temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.
Lifting capacity testing was carried out on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, whereas under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the holding force.
Safe handling of neodymium magnets
Thermal limits
Do not overheat. NdFeB magnets are sensitive to temperature. If you need operation above 80°C, inquire about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Bodily injuries
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so immense that it can result in hematomas, pinching, and broken bones. Protective gloves are recommended.
Protect data
Intense magnetic fields can corrupt files on credit cards, HDDs, and storage devices. Stay away of min. 10 cm.
Danger to the youngest
Adult use only. Small elements pose a choking risk, leading to serious injuries. Keep out of reach of kids and pets.
Avoid contact if allergic
Allergy Notice: The nickel-copper-nickel coating consists of nickel. If redness appears, immediately stop working with magnets and use protective gear.
Machining danger
Machining of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Eye protection
Despite the nickel coating, the material is delicate and not impact-resistant. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into hazardous fragments.
ICD Warning
Life threat: Neodymium magnets can deactivate pacemakers and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
Safe operation
Before use, check safety instructions. Uncontrolled attraction can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Think ahead.
GPS and phone interference
GPS units and smartphones are highly sensitive to magnetism. Direct contact with a powerful NdFeB magnet can decalibrate the internal compass in your phone.
