Strengths as well as weaknesses of neodymium magnets.
Pros
- Their power is maintained, and after around 10 years it drops only by ~1% (theoretically),
- They show high resistance to demagnetization induced by external disturbances,
- The use of an aesthetic finish of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to be more visually attractive,
- Neodymium magnets create maximum magnetic induction on a small area, which allows for strong attraction,
- Through (adequate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal strength, allowing for operation at temperatures approaching 230°C and above...
- Considering the potential of free forming and adaptation to unique requirements, NdFeB magnets can be created in a wide range of shapes and sizes, which increases their versatility,
- Wide application in advanced technology sectors – they find application in mass storage devices, drive modules, medical devices, also technologically advanced constructions.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in small dimensions, which enables their usage in compact constructions
Limitations
- To avoid cracks under impact, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we advise using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture, when using outdoors
- Limited ability of creating nuts in the magnet and complicated forms - recommended is casing - mounting mechanism.
- Health risk to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, in case of ingestion, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Additionally, small elements of these devices can disrupt the diagnostic process medical when they are in the body.
- Due to expensive raw materials, their price exceeds standard values,
Holding force characteristics
Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnet – what affects it?
- on a base made of structural steel, perfectly concentrating the magnetic field
- whose transverse dimension equals approx. 10 mm
- characterized by lack of roughness
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (metal-to-metal)
- under axial application of breakaway force (90-degree angle)
- at ambient temperature room level
Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors
- Gap between magnet and steel – even a fraction of a millimeter of separation (caused e.g. by varnish or unevenness) diminishes the magnet efficiency, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Direction of force – highest force is obtained only during perpendicular pulling. The shear force of the magnet along the plate is typically several times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Steel type – low-carbon steel attracts best. Higher carbon content decrease magnetic permeability and lifting capacity.
- Base smoothness – the more even the plate, the larger the contact zone and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness acts like micro-gaps.
- Thermal conditions – neodymium magnets have a negative temperature coefficient. When it is hot they lose power, and at low temperatures they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, however under shearing force the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the holding force.
H&S for magnets
Maximum temperature
Standard neodymium magnets (grade N) undergo demagnetization when the temperature exceeds 80°C. Damage is permanent.
Conscious usage
Handle magnets consciously. Their immense force can shock even professionals. Be vigilant and do not underestimate their power.
Do not drill into magnets
Fire warning: Neodymium dust is highly flammable. Do not process magnets in home conditions as this may cause fire.
Adults only
Always store magnets out of reach of children. Choking hazard is significant, and the effects of magnets connecting inside the body are very dangerous.
Data carriers
Avoid bringing magnets close to a purse, computer, or TV. The magnetism can irreversibly ruin these devices and erase data from cards.
Nickel coating and allergies
Certain individuals have a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the common plating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact may cause a rash. We suggest use safety gloves.
Shattering risk
Watch out for shards. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, launching sharp fragments into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
Health Danger
Medical warning: Strong magnets can deactivate pacemakers and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
Pinching danger
Big blocks can break fingers in a fraction of a second. Never place your hand between two strong magnets.
Precision electronics
GPS units and smartphones are extremely sensitive to magnetism. Direct contact with a strong magnet can decalibrate the internal compass in your phone.
