Other products
Pros as well as cons of neodymium magnets.
Strengths
- Their magnetic field is durable, and after around 10 years it decreases only by ~1% (theoretically),
- They have excellent resistance to magnetic field loss when exposed to opposing magnetic fields,
- In other words, due to the aesthetic surface of nickel, the element gains visual value,
- Magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet turns out to be exceptional,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the shape) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Possibility of custom shaping and adapting to concrete needs,
- Significant place in innovative solutions – they are commonly used in computer drives, motor assemblies, advanced medical instruments, as well as modern systems.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer high power in compact dimensions, which enables their usage in miniature devices
Limitations
- Brittleness is one of their disadvantages. Upon intense impact they can break. We advise keeping them in a special holder, which not only secures them against impacts but also raises their durability
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in force. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material stable to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- Due to limitations in creating threads and complex shapes in magnets, we propose using a housing - magnetic mount.
- Possible danger related to microscopic parts of magnets pose a threat, in case of ingestion, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these devices can complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Holding force characteristics
Highest magnetic holding force – what affects it?
- with the application of a yoke made of special test steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- whose thickness equals approx. 10 mm
- with a plane cleaned and smooth
- with total lack of distance (without impurities)
- for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
- at conditions approx. 20°C
Practical aspects of lifting capacity – factors
- Gap between surfaces – even a fraction of a millimeter of separation (caused e.g. by varnish or unevenness) significantly weakens the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Load vector – maximum parameter is obtained only during pulling at a 90° angle. The resistance to sliding of the magnet along the plate is standardly several times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Steel thickness – insufficiently thick steel causes magnetic saturation, causing part of the power to be escaped to the other side.
- Chemical composition of the base – low-carbon steel gives the best results. Alloy steels lower magnetic properties and holding force.
- Surface structure – the smoother and more polished the plate, the larger the contact zone and stronger the hold. Unevenness creates an air distance.
- Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a sensitivity to temperature. When it is hot they are weaker, and at low temperatures gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity was measured using a polished steel plate of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, however under shearing force the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate lowers the load capacity.
Warnings
Magnets are brittle
Watch out for shards. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, ejecting sharp fragments into the air. Eye protection is mandatory.
Danger to the youngest
These products are not toys. Accidental ingestion of several magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which constitutes a direct threat to life and requires immediate surgery.
Demagnetization risk
Watch the temperature. Exposing the magnet to high heat will permanently weaken its magnetic structure and pulling force.
Physical harm
Watch your fingers. Two powerful magnets will join immediately with a force of several hundred kilograms, crushing anything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
Dust is flammable
Powder generated during machining of magnets is combustible. Do not drill into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Phone sensors
Navigation devices and smartphones are highly susceptible to magnetism. Direct contact with a strong magnet can ruin the internal compass in your phone.
Data carriers
Do not bring magnets near a purse, computer, or TV. The magnetism can irreversibly ruin these devices and wipe information from cards.
Safe operation
Be careful. Rare earth magnets attract from a long distance and snap with massive power, often quicker than you can move away.
Metal Allergy
Medical facts indicate that the nickel plating (standard magnet coating) is a strong allergen. If you have an allergy, avoid direct skin contact or opt for coated magnets.
ICD Warning
Patients with a heart stimulator have to maintain an safe separation from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the functioning of the implant.
