Pros and cons of rare earth magnets.
Advantages
- They retain attractive force for around 10 years – the drop is just ~1% (in theory),
- They retain their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
- By using a shiny layer of silver, the element presents an professional look,
- Magnetic induction on the surface of the magnet is extremely intense,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can function (depending on the form) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Possibility of exact forming as well as adapting to complex applications,
- Versatile presence in future technologies – they find application in mass storage devices, brushless drives, diagnostic systems, also other advanced devices.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer strong magnetic field in compact dimensions, which enables their usage in compact constructions
Limitations
- They are prone to damage upon too strong impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth securing magnets in a protective case. Such protection not only shields the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
- We warn that neodymium magnets can lose their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we suggest our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- They rust in a humid environment. For use outdoors we suggest using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Limited possibility of creating nuts in the magnet and complex forms - recommended is cover - mounting mechanism.
- Possible danger to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child safety. Furthermore, small components of these magnets can complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets are more expensive than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities
Lifting parameters
Maximum lifting force for a neodymium magnet – what affects it?
- with the contact of a sheet made of special test steel, ensuring maximum field concentration
- whose thickness equals approx. 10 mm
- with an ground touching surface
- without any insulating layer between the magnet and steel
- during pulling in a direction vertical to the plane
- in neutral thermal conditions
Determinants of lifting force in real conditions
- Gap (betwixt the magnet and the plate), since even a very small clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a drastic drop in force by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or dirt).
- Force direction – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet holds much less (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Wall thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Magnetic flux passes through the material instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Steel grade – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Cast iron may have worse magnetic properties.
- Surface finish – full contact is possible only on smooth steel. Rough texture reduce the real contact area, weakening the magnet.
- Thermal environment – heating the magnet results in weakening of force. Check the thermal limit for a given model.
Lifting capacity was measured using a steel plate with a smooth surface of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, whereas under parallel forces the holding force is lower. Moreover, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
GPS and phone interference
Navigation devices and smartphones are extremely sensitive to magnetic fields. Direct contact with a powerful NdFeB magnet can decalibrate the internal compass in your phone.
Choking Hazard
Product intended for adults. Small elements pose a choking risk, causing serious injuries. Store out of reach of children and animals.
Thermal limits
Watch the temperature. Heating the magnet to high heat will ruin its magnetic structure and strength.
Immense force
Before starting, read the rules. Sudden snapping can break the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.
Safe distance
Do not bring magnets close to a wallet, computer, or screen. The magnetic field can destroy these devices and wipe information from cards.
Machining danger
Machining of NdFeB material carries a risk of fire hazard. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Crushing force
Mind your fingers. Two powerful magnets will snap together immediately with a force of massive weight, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!
Warning for heart patients
Warning for patients: Powerful magnets affect electronics. Maintain minimum 30 cm distance or ask another person to handle the magnets.
Warning for allergy sufferers
Allergy Notice: The Ni-Cu-Ni coating contains nickel. If redness occurs, cease working with magnets and use protective gear.
Protective goggles
Watch out for shards. Magnets can explode upon uncontrolled impact, launching shards into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
