Strengths and weaknesses of neodymium magnets.
Benefits
- They do not lose magnetism, even during around 10 years – the decrease in strength is only ~1% (theoretically),
- Magnets effectively resist against loss of magnetization caused by ambient magnetic noise,
- A magnet with a shiny silver surface looks better,
- Neodymium magnets generate maximum magnetic induction on a their surface, which ensures high operational effectiveness,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they are capable of working (depending on the shape) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Considering the option of free forming and adaptation to specialized solutions, neodymium magnets can be produced in a variety of forms and dimensions, which amplifies use scope,
- Fundamental importance in modern technologies – they are commonly used in data components, electric motors, diagnostic systems, as well as modern systems.
- Thanks to efficiency per cm³, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Cons
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we suggest using special steel housings. Such a solution secures the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets experience a drop in force. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size, as well as shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we advise using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- We recommend a housing - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in realizing threads inside the magnet and complicated shapes.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. Additionally, small components of these products can disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.
- With mass production the cost of neodymium magnets is a challenge,
Holding force characteristics
Maximum lifting force for a neodymium magnet – what affects it?
- with the use of a sheet made of special test steel, ensuring full magnetic saturation
- whose transverse dimension is min. 10 mm
- with a surface perfectly flat
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (surface-to-surface)
- during pulling in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at ambient temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius
Determinants of lifting force in real conditions
- Gap between surfaces – every millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by varnish or dirt) drastically reduces the magnet efficiency, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When applying parallel force, the magnet holds much less (often approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Paper-thin metal limits the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material type – the best choice is high-permeability steel. Stainless steels may have worse magnetic properties.
- Base smoothness – the smoother and more polished the surface, the better the adhesion and higher the lifting capacity. Unevenness creates an air distance.
- Heat – neodymium magnets have a negative temperature coefficient. At higher temperatures they lose power, and at low temperatures they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under perpendicular forces, however under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. Moreover, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Safety rules for work with NdFeB magnets
Swallowing risk
Neodymium magnets are not toys. Eating multiple magnets can lead to them pinching intestinal walls, which poses a severe health hazard and requires urgent medical intervention.
Dust is flammable
Dust created during grinding of magnets is flammable. Avoid drilling into magnets unless you are an expert.
Protect data
Powerful magnetic fields can destroy records on credit cards, HDDs, and other magnetic media. Maintain a gap of min. 10 cm.
Danger to pacemakers
Life threat: Neodymium magnets can deactivate pacemakers and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have electronic implants.
Maximum temperature
Regular neodymium magnets (grade N) undergo demagnetization when the temperature exceeds 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.
Skin irritation risks
Nickel alert: The nickel-copper-nickel coating consists of nickel. If an allergic reaction occurs, cease working with magnets and wear gloves.
Material brittleness
Despite the nickel coating, the material is brittle and not impact-resistant. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Handling rules
Before use, read the rules. Uncontrolled attraction can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.
Physical harm
Protect your hands. Two powerful magnets will join immediately with a force of massive weight, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!
Keep away from electronics
A powerful magnetic field negatively affects the functioning of compasses in smartphones and GPS navigation. Keep magnets close to a device to avoid breaking the sensors.
