Frequently asked questions

Which rod should I choose for fine contamination?
For particles below 0.5 mm — a Ø32 mm rod in grade N52, with surface induction of about 10,000 Gs. A Ø25 rod in grade N42 gives about 6,500 Gs and is chosen for contamination above 1 mm: bolts, washers, pieces of wire.
Which rod pitch should I choose?
The narrow pitch, 40 mm centre to centre, for fine free-flowing fractions — it gives denser coverage of the cross-section. The wide pitch, 50 mm, for granulates and for damp, greasy or sticky materials, where a narrow pitch risks the material bridging above the rods.
Why does efficiency drop after a few weeks of operation?
Almost always because the separator has not been cleaned. The layer of captured particles shields the field, and further particles settle on that layer rather than on the rod surface, where the gradient is far stronger. The magnets themselves do not weaken at that rate.

This product serves to effectively catch ferromagnetic contaminants from bulk and liquid products. It is commonly used for cleaning flour, sugar, plastic granules, as well as oils and coolants. Thanks to the use of strong neodymium magnets, the rod catches even metallic dust.
The construction relies on a sealed, welded stainless steel housing, polished smooth. The center is filled with NdFeB magnets and pole pieces, arranged to maximize the field on the tube surface. Such construction ensures full resistance to corrosion, water, oils, and acids.
Due to the high power of the magnet, direct removal of filings can be troublesome and time-consuming. We recommend sticking packing tape to the cluster of filings and tearing it off together with the contaminants. For easier operation, it is worth considering ordering a rod in a version with a cleaning sleeve.
The more Gauss, the smaller and more weakly magnetic particles will be effectively caught. Standard rods (~8000 Gs) are sufficient for catching screws, nails, and steel shavings. For the food and precision industry, we recommend the highest induction parameters.
We fulfill individual orders for bars perfectly matched to your machine or separator. The rod end is strictly adapted to the fastening system in your device. Contact us for a quote on a non-standard dimension.

Pros and cons of rare earth magnets.

Advantages

Apart from their superior holding force, neodymium magnets have these key benefits:
  • Their strength is durable, and after around 10 years it decreases only by ~1% (according to research),
  • They possess excellent resistance to weakening of magnetic properties due to opposing magnetic fields,
  • By using a lustrous layer of gold, the element gains an elegant look,
  • Neodymium magnets achieve maximum magnetic induction on a small surface, which ensures high operational effectiveness,
  • Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their form) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
  • Thanks to the option of precise shaping and adaptation to unique solutions, NdFeB magnets can be produced in a variety of forms and dimensions, which makes them more universal,
  • Key role in future technologies – they are used in computer drives, electric drive systems, medical equipment, as well as technologically advanced constructions.
  • Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, in miniature format,

Limitations

What to avoid - cons of neodymium magnets: tips and applications.
  • At strong impacts they can crack, therefore we recommend placing them in strong housings. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
  • Neodymium magnets lose their force under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore during using outdoors, we recommend using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
  • Due to limitations in creating threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we recommend using a housing - magnetic mechanism.
  • Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets pose a threat, in case of ingestion, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small components of these magnets are able to complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
  • With budget limitations the cost of neodymium magnets is a challenge,

Pull force analysis

Maximum lifting force for a neodymium magnet – what affects it?

Breakaway force was defined for optimal configuration, assuming:
  • on a plate made of structural steel, optimally conducting the magnetic flux
  • possessing a massiveness of min. 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
  • with a plane cleaned and smooth
  • without the slightest insulating layer between the magnet and steel
  • under axial application of breakaway force (90-degree angle)
  • at ambient temperature room level

What influences lifting capacity in practice

During everyday use, the real power results from a number of factors, ranked from the most important:
  • Space between magnet and steel – even a fraction of a millimeter of separation (caused e.g. by varnish or dirt) significantly weakens the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
  • Force direction – remember that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the holding force drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
  • Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field passes through the material instead of converting into lifting capacity.
  • Steel grade – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may generate lower lifting capacity.
  • Surface finish – ideal contact is obtained only on polished steel. Any scratches and bumps reduce the real contact area, reducing force.
  • Thermal factor – hot environment weakens magnetic field. Too high temperature can permanently damage the magnet.

Holding force was checked on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, however under attempts to slide the magnet the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate decreases the holding force.

Warnings
Sensitization to coating

A percentage of the population suffer from a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the typical protective layer for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact might lead to skin redness. We strongly advise use safety gloves.

Shattering risk

Despite the nickel coating, neodymium is delicate and not impact-resistant. Do not hit, as the magnet may crumble into sharp, dangerous pieces.

Combustion hazard

Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets carries a risk of fire risk. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.

Electronic devices

Do not bring magnets close to a purse, computer, or TV. The magnetism can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.

Choking Hazard

Always store magnets out of reach of children. Choking hazard is high, and the consequences of magnets clamping inside the body are fatal.

Health Danger

Individuals with a ICD must keep an safe separation from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the functioning of the life-saving device.

Finger safety

Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so great that it can cause hematomas, crushing, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.

Permanent damage

Do not overheat. Neodymium magnets are susceptible to heat. If you require resistance above 80°C, look for special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).

Handling rules

Be careful. Neodymium magnets attract from a long distance and snap with huge force, often quicker than you can react.

Keep away from electronics

Be aware: rare earth magnets generate a field that confuses sensitive sensors. Maintain a safe distance from your phone, tablet, and GPS.
