Advantages as well as disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Strengths
- They retain full power for around ten years – the loss is just ~1% (according to analyses),
- They are extremely resistant to demagnetization induced by external disturbances,
- In other words, due to the smooth finish of silver, the element becomes visually attractive,
- Magnets are characterized by maximum magnetic induction on the outer side,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their form) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- Thanks to freedom in constructing and the ability to customize to complex applications,
- Key role in modern industrial fields – they serve a role in computer drives, electric motors, diagnostic systems, also complex engineering applications.
- Thanks to concentrated force, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Disadvantages
- They are prone to damage upon heavy impacts. To avoid cracks, it is worth protecting magnets using a steel holder. Such protection not only protects the magnet but also increases its resistance to damage
- NdFeB magnets lose power when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
- They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we advise using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- We recommend casing - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in producing threads inside the magnet and complicated shapes.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets are risky, when accidentally swallowed, which gains importance in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that small elements of these devices are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical after entering the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which increases costs of application in large quantities
Holding force characteristics
Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameters – what affects it?
- using a sheet made of mild steel, serving as a circuit closing element
- possessing a thickness of at least 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
- with an polished touching surface
- under conditions of no distance (surface-to-surface)
- under perpendicular force direction (90-degree angle)
- in stable room temperature
Magnet lifting force in use – key factors
- Gap between surfaces – every millimeter of separation (caused e.g. by veneer or dirt) diminishes the magnet efficiency, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When slipping, the magnet exhibits significantly lower power (often approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
- Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Thin sheet restricts the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Steel type – low-carbon steel gives the best results. Alloy steels decrease magnetic properties and lifting capacity.
- Smoothness – ideal contact is obtained only on polished steel. Rough texture create air cushions, reducing force.
- Operating temperature – neodymium magnets have a sensitivity to temperature. At higher temperatures they lose power, and at low temperatures they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity was assessed with the use of a steel plate with a smooth surface of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under parallel forces the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
H&S for magnets
Implant safety
Medical warning: Strong magnets can turn off pacemakers and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have electronic implants.
Do not underestimate power
Be careful. Rare earth magnets act from a distance and connect with huge force, often quicker than you can move away.
Allergy Warning
Allergy Notice: The nickel-copper-nickel coating consists of nickel. If an allergic reaction appears, immediately stop handling magnets and wear gloves.
Thermal limits
Avoid heat. NdFeB magnets are sensitive to heat. If you require resistance above 80°C, inquire about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Compass and GPS
A powerful magnetic field negatively affects the functioning of compasses in phones and navigation systems. Do not bring magnets close to a smartphone to avoid damaging the sensors.
Adults only
Adult use only. Small elements can be swallowed, leading to severe trauma. Keep out of reach of kids and pets.
Data carriers
Powerful magnetic fields can corrupt files on credit cards, hard drives, and storage devices. Keep a distance of min. 10 cm.
Combustion hazard
Drilling and cutting of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Finger safety
Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so immense that it can cause hematomas, crushing, and broken bones. Protective gloves are recommended.
Material brittleness
Beware of splinters. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, launching sharp fragments into the air. Wear goggles.
