Strengths as well as weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- They have unchanged lifting capacity, and over around 10 years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
- They retain their magnetic properties even under strong external field,
- In other words, due to the reflective layer of nickel, the element gains a professional look,
- Magnets are distinguished by very high magnetic induction on the active area,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the shape) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to the option of precise forming and customization to custom solutions, neodymium magnets can be produced in a variety of shapes and sizes, which makes them more universal,
- Key role in high-tech industry – they find application in mass storage devices, drive modules, medical equipment, and multitasking production systems.
- Thanks to efficiency per cm³, small magnets offer high operating force, occupying minimum space,
Disadvantages
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we suggest using special steel housings. Such a solution secures the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in power. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- They oxidize in a humid environment - during use outdoors we recommend using waterproof magnets e.g. in rubber, plastic
- Due to limitations in creating threads and complicated shapes in magnets, we recommend using cover - magnetic mount.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. Additionally, small elements of these devices can disrupt the diagnostic process medical in case of swallowing.
- Higher cost of purchase is a significant factor to consider compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Lifting parameters
Detachment force of the magnet in optimal conditions – what contributes to it?
- with the contact of a sheet made of low-carbon steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- with a cross-section of at least 10 mm
- with a surface cleaned and smooth
- under conditions of gap-free contact (surface-to-surface)
- under vertical application of breakaway force (90-degree angle)
- at standard ambient temperature
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Clearance – the presence of foreign body (paint, tape, gap) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the holding force drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the maximum value.
- Metal thickness – the thinner the sheet, the weaker the hold. Part of the magnetic field passes through the material instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Steel grade – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may generate lower lifting capacity.
- Surface finish – full contact is obtained only on smooth steel. Rough texture create air cushions, reducing force.
- Thermal environment – heating the magnet results in weakening of force. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity was determined with the use of a polished steel plate of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular detachment force, in contrast under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate decreases the lifting capacity.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Warning for allergy sufferers
Medical facts indicate that nickel (the usual finish) is a potent allergen. If your skin reacts to metals, avoid touching magnets with bare hands or select encased magnets.
Handling guide
Use magnets with awareness. Their huge power can surprise even professionals. Be vigilant and do not underestimate their force.
GPS and phone interference
Note: rare earth magnets produce a field that disrupts precision electronics. Keep a separation from your phone, device, and GPS.
Crushing force
Big blocks can break fingers in a fraction of a second. Under no circumstances place your hand between two strong magnets.
Cards and drives
Do not bring magnets near a wallet, laptop, or screen. The magnetic field can irreversibly ruin these devices and wipe information from cards.
Warning for heart patients
Life threat: Strong magnets can deactivate heart devices and defibrillators. Stay away if you have electronic implants.
Shattering risk
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, which means they are very brittle. Impact of two magnets will cause them breaking into shards.
Permanent damage
Control the heat. Exposing the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will destroy its properties and strength.
Swallowing risk
Adult use only. Tiny parts can be swallowed, causing severe trauma. Keep away from kids and pets.
Combustion hazard
Combustion risk: Neodymium dust is explosive. Avoid machining magnets in home conditions as this risks ignition.
