Pros and cons of rare earth magnets.
Benefits
- They virtually do not lose power, because even after ten years the performance loss is only ~1% (in laboratory conditions),
- They do not lose their magnetic properties even under external field action,
- The use of an refined layer of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to have aesthetics,
- Neodymium magnets generate maximum magnetic induction on a small area, which ensures high operational effectiveness,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the shape) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to the possibility of accurate forming and adaptation to custom needs, NdFeB magnets can be manufactured in a variety of shapes and sizes, which expands the range of possible applications,
- Versatile presence in modern industrial fields – they are used in hard drives, motor assemblies, diagnostic systems, as well as complex engineering applications.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer strong magnetic field in small dimensions, which makes them useful in miniature devices
Disadvantages
- At very strong impacts they can break, therefore we recommend placing them in strong housings. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their power decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore during using outdoors, we advise using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
- Limited possibility of producing threads in the magnet and complex shapes - recommended is cover - mounting mechanism.
- Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these magnets can complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- Due to neodymium price, their price is higher than average,
Pull force analysis
Maximum holding power of the magnet – what it depends on?
- with the contact of a yoke made of special test steel, guaranteeing maximum field concentration
- with a cross-section of at least 10 mm
- with a plane perfectly flat
- with total lack of distance (without impurities)
- under axial force direction (90-degree angle)
- at conditions approx. 20°C
Practical aspects of lifting capacity – factors
- Clearance – existence of any layer (rust, dirt, air) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which lowers power steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Load vector – maximum parameter is obtained only during pulling at a 90° angle. The force required to slide of the magnet along the plate is usually several times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Steel thickness – too thin sheet does not accept the full field, causing part of the flux to be lost to the other side.
- Material type – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Hardened steels may generate lower lifting capacity.
- Smoothness – full contact is obtained only on polished steel. Any scratches and bumps create air cushions, reducing force.
- Thermal environment – heating the magnet results in weakening of induction. It is worth remembering the maximum operating temperature for a given model.
Lifting capacity testing was performed on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under perpendicular forces, however under shearing force the lifting capacity is smaller. In addition, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate reduces the load capacity.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Nickel allergy
Some people have a hypersensitivity to nickel, which is the standard coating for NdFeB magnets. Extended handling might lead to dermatitis. We recommend use protective gloves.
Heat sensitivity
Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) undergo demagnetization when the temperature exceeds 80°C. This process is irreversible.
Keep away from computers
Data protection: Neodymium magnets can damage payment cards and delicate electronics (pacemakers, medical aids, mechanical watches).
Bone fractures
Watch your fingers. Two large magnets will join immediately with a force of several hundred kilograms, crushing anything in their path. Be careful!
Machining danger
Drilling and cutting of neodymium magnets carries a risk of fire risk. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
ICD Warning
Individuals with a pacemaker have to keep an absolute distance from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the operation of the life-saving device.
Material brittleness
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, meaning they are prone to chipping. Collision of two magnets leads to them breaking into small pieces.
Keep away from children
Strictly keep magnets out of reach of children. Risk of swallowing is high, and the consequences of magnets connecting inside the body are tragic.
Compass and GPS
Navigation devices and mobile phones are highly susceptible to magnetic fields. Direct contact with a strong magnet can ruin the internal compass in your phone.
Handling guide
Handle magnets with awareness. Their immense force can shock even professionals. Be vigilant and respect their power.
