Frequently asked questions

How much will a magnetic holder hold in practice?
The catalogue value assumes full contact with smooth steel at least 10 mm thick and a perpendicular pull. Thinner sheet, paint, rust and surface irregularities reduce it considerably: on 1 mm sheet about half remains. Lifting and vertical mounting call for an additional safety margin.
Will a holder work on stainless steel?
Not on austenitic grades 304 and 316 — they are effectively non-magnetic. It will not work on aluminium, copper or brass either. Those materials need a mechanical gripper.
Which coating for which conditions?
Nickel-copper-nickel (NiCuNi) is the standard and covers most applications. Epoxy is used for damp environments and outdoor work, zinc is sufficient for dry interiors. Holders in a steel housing or in rubber also protect the magnet against impact.

Magnet pull force

Magnetic Induction

Other offers

They serve to create mobile suspension points without the need to drill holes in beams. In workshops and garages, they work perfectly for guiding cables or hanging work lighting.
The tip is fully demountable - you can unscrew the hook and screw in a bolt, eyelet, or other element in its place. Check the thread size in the product specification to select matching replacements.
You will get the greatest force by mounting the magnet on a thick, smooth steel surface vertically. When mounting on a wall (vertically), the holding force is much lower due to shear force (the magnet may slide).
The steel housing (cup) shields the magnetic field, directing all its power downwards, onto the contact surface. A bare magnet could crack upon sudden application to metal, and the holder is resistant to this.
For outdoor use (in rain), metal hangers may eventually develop a rusty coating over time. In home and office conditions, they will serve for many years without signs of wear.

Strengths as well as weaknesses of neodymium magnets.

Strengths

Apart from their superior magnetism, neodymium magnets have these key benefits:
  • They virtually do not lose strength, because even after ten years the decline in efficiency is only ~1% (based on calculations),
  • Magnets very well defend themselves against demagnetization caused by foreign field sources,
  • The use of an refined finish of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to be more visually attractive,
  • Magnets exhibit extremely high magnetic induction on the surface,
  • Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets are capable of operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
  • Thanks to freedom in shaping and the ability to customize to specific needs,
  • Universal use in modern technologies – they are commonly used in magnetic memories, motor assemblies, advanced medical instruments, and other advanced devices.
  • Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer strong magnetic field in small dimensions, which makes them useful in miniature devices

Weaknesses

Drawbacks and weaknesses of neodymium magnets and proposals for their use:
  • Brittleness is one of their disadvantages. Upon intense impact they can break. We advise keeping them in a special holder, which not only protects them against impacts but also increases their durability
  • NdFeB magnets demagnetize when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent weakening of strength (a factor is the shape and dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are extremely resistant to heat
  • Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we advise using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture, when using outdoors
  • Due to limitations in creating threads and complex shapes in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic mount.
  • Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child safety. Furthermore, small elements of these products are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical when they are in the body.
  • Due to expensive raw materials, their price exceeds standard values,

Lifting parameters

Maximum lifting capacity of the magnetwhat affects it?

The specified lifting capacity represents the maximum value, measured under optimal environment, meaning:
  • using a base made of mild steel, acting as a magnetic yoke
  • with a thickness no less than 10 mm
  • with a surface free of scratches
  • without the slightest clearance between the magnet and steel
  • for force applied at a right angle (pull-off, not shear)
  • in temp. approx. 20°C

What influences lifting capacity in practice

Real force is influenced by specific conditions, mainly (from priority):
  • Air gap (betwixt the magnet and the plate), because even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) results in a drastic drop in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to paint, corrosion or dirt).
  • Force direction – catalog parameter refers to detachment vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits much less (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
  • Wall thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux passes through the material instead of converting into lifting capacity.
  • Material type – the best choice is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may generate lower lifting capacity.
  • Surface condition – ground elements guarantee perfect abutment, which increases field saturation. Uneven metal weaken the grip.
  • Thermal conditions – neodymium magnets have a sensitivity to temperature. When it is hot they lose power, and at low temperatures gain strength (up to a certain limit).

Holding force was measured on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, however under shearing force the lifting capacity is smaller. Moreover, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate reduces the holding force.

Safety rules for work with neodymium magnets
Do not drill into magnets

Machining of NdFeB material carries a risk of fire risk. Neodymium dust oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.

Pacemakers

Warning for patients: Powerful magnets affect electronics. Keep at least 30 cm distance or ask another person to work with the magnets.

Respect the power

Handle magnets consciously. Their huge power can surprise even experienced users. Plan your moves and respect their power.

Magnet fragility

Despite metallic appearance, neodymium is brittle and cannot withstand shocks. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may shatter into hazardous fragments.

Demagnetization risk

Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) undergo demagnetization when the temperature exceeds 80°C. Damage is permanent.

Swallowing risk

Adult use only. Tiny parts pose a choking risk, leading to serious injuries. Keep away from kids and pets.

Sensitization to coating

Certain individuals have a hypersensitivity to nickel, which is the standard coating for neodymium magnets. Frequent touching can result in skin redness. We recommend use safety gloves.

Safe distance

Data protection: Strong magnets can ruin data carriers and delicate electronics (pacemakers, medical aids, timepieces).

Precision electronics

Navigation devices and smartphones are extremely susceptible to magnetic fields. Close proximity with a strong magnet can ruin the sensors in your phone.

Finger safety

Pinching hazard: The attraction force is so immense that it can cause blood blisters, crushing, and even bone fractures. Use thick gloves.
