Pros and cons of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Pros
- They virtually do not lose power, because even after 10 years the performance loss is only ~1% (according to literature),
- Magnets very well resist against demagnetization caused by foreign field sources,
- The use of an elegant coating of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to look better,
- Magnets have very high magnetic induction on the surface,
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by very high magnetic induction on the magnet surface and can work (depending on the form) even at a temperature of 230°C or more...
- Possibility of detailed forming as well as adjusting to defined requirements,
- Huge importance in electronics industry – they are utilized in magnetic memories, drive modules, medical devices, and technologically advanced constructions.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they provide effective action, making them ideal for precision applications
Limitations
- At strong impacts they can crack, therefore we advise placing them in steel cases. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose strength when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- We suggest a housing - magnetic mount, due to difficulties in creating nuts inside the magnet and complicated forms.
- Possible danger to health – tiny shards of magnets are risky, when accidentally swallowed, which becomes key in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these magnets can be problematic in diagnostics medical in case of swallowing.
- Due to neodymium price, their price is relatively high,
Pull force analysis
Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnet – what affects it?
- on a plate made of structural steel, perfectly concentrating the magnetic field
- whose thickness equals approx. 10 mm
- with a plane cleaned and smooth
- without the slightest air gap between the magnet and steel
- for force acting at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
- in neutral thermal conditions
What influences lifting capacity in practice
- Space between magnet and steel – even a fraction of a millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by varnish or dirt) significantly weakens the magnet efficiency, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Angle of force application – highest force is reached only during pulling at a 90° angle. The force required to slide of the magnet along the plate is standardly several times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Steel grade – the best choice is high-permeability steel. Stainless steels may attract less.
- Surface finish – full contact is possible only on polished steel. Rough texture reduce the real contact area, reducing force.
- Thermal factor – high temperature weakens magnetic field. Too high temperature can permanently damage the magnet.
Holding force was tested on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, in contrast under shearing force the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. In addition, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
H&S for magnets
Pacemakers
For implant holders: Strong magnetic fields disrupt electronics. Keep minimum 30 cm distance or request help to handle the magnets.
Compass and GPS
GPS units and mobile phones are extremely sensitive to magnetism. Close proximity with a powerful NdFeB magnet can decalibrate the internal compass in your phone.
Caution required
Before use, check safety instructions. Sudden snapping can destroy the magnet or hurt your hand. Think ahead.
Finger safety
Large magnets can crush fingers in a fraction of a second. Never place your hand betwixt two attracting surfaces.
Nickel allergy
Certain individuals suffer from a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the standard coating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact may cause skin redness. It is best to use safety gloves.
Mechanical processing
Machining of NdFeB material poses a fire risk. Neodymium dust reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Danger to the youngest
Only for adults. Tiny parts can be swallowed, causing severe trauma. Store away from children and animals.
Material brittleness
Beware of splinters. Magnets can fracture upon violent connection, launching shards into the air. Wear goggles.
Permanent damage
Regular neodymium magnets (N-type) lose magnetization when the temperature surpasses 80°C. This process is irreversible.
Keep away from computers
Device Safety: Strong magnets can damage data carriers and sensitive devices (heart implants, hearing aids, timepieces).
