How strong a magnet do I need for magnet fishing?
Our search magnets are rated between 32 kg and 680 kg of pull force. The rating is measured as a straight, perpendicular pull on thick, clean steel — in a river you almost never pull that way, so treat it as a figure for comparing models rather than a promise. For a first magnet, mid-range models around 300 kg are easier to handle than the heaviest ones, which are simply hard to lift once they grab a submerged object.
What rope and shackle should I pair with the magnet?
Match the whole chain, not just the magnet. Our ø10 mm rope is rated at 1592 kg and the M10 shackle at 320 kg, so with a 310 kg magnet the shackle is the limiting part. Whatever you buy, check the rating of every component separately and take the lowest one as the rating of the set. The knot at the eye is usually weaker than the rope itself.
What is the difference between a single-sided and a double-sided fishing magnet?
A single-sided magnet holds on one face only, so it has to land the right way round. A double-sided one grabs from either face, which matters when you throw it into moving water and cannot control how it lands. The trade-off is weight and price for the same nominal pull force — the F200 GOLD DUAL, for instance, is rated at 601 kg against 310 kg for the single-sided F200 GOLD.
Does the pull force rating apply underwater?
Water itself is not the problem — it is not magnetic and barely changes the force. Double-sided holders (Two-Side) have two active magnetic surfaces and two mounting holes. Side mounting is ideal for throwing from the shore, as the magnet drags flat along the bottom. Single-sided magnets are usually lighter and cheaper but less effective for long throws.

Optimal lifting capacity of a neodymium magnetwhat it depends on?

The lifting capacity listed is a theoretical maximum value conducted under specific, ideal conditions:
  • on a block made of structural steel, optimally conducting the magnetic flux
  • with a thickness of at least 10 mm
  • with an ideally smooth contact surface
  • under conditions of gap-free contact (metal-to-metal)
  • during detachment in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
  • in stable room temperature

Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors

Holding efficiency is influenced by working environment parameters, including (from most important):
  • Gap (betwixt the magnet and the plate), as even a tiny distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a decrease in force by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or dirt).
  • Loading method – catalog parameter refers to pulling vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet holds significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of nominal force).
  • Metal thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field penetrates through instead of generating force.
  • Material type – ideal substrate is high-permeability steel. Hardened steels may have worse magnetic properties.
  • Smoothness – ideal contact is possible only on smooth steel. Rough texture create air cushions, reducing force.
  • Thermal factor – high temperature reduces pulling force. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.

Lifting capacity testing was performed on plates with a smooth surface of optimal thickness, under a perpendicular pulling force, in contrast under parallel forces the holding force is lower. Moreover, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the lifting capacity.

An intense magnetic field disrupts the operation of compasses in smartphones and navigation systems. Do not bring magnets near a device to prevent breaking the sensors.

Implant safety

Warning for patients: Strong magnetic fields disrupt medical devices. Maintain minimum 30 cm distance or ask another person to handle the magnets.

Nickel coating and allergies

It is widely known that nickel (the usual finish) is a common allergen. If you have an allergy, refrain from touching magnets with bare hands or select encased magnets.

Crushing risk

Pinching hazard: The pulling power is so great that it can result in hematomas, pinching, and broken bones. Protective gloves are recommended.
