Strengths and weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Advantages
- They do not lose magnetism, even during approximately ten years – the drop in strength is only ~1% (based on measurements),
- Neodymium magnets are characterized by highly resistant to magnetic field loss caused by external field sources,
- Thanks to the glossy finish, the coating of Ni-Cu-Ni, gold, or silver gives an aesthetic appearance,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a intense magnetic field – this is one of their assets,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the shape) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Due to the option of precise forming and adaptation to unique requirements, magnetic components can be created in a wide range of geometric configurations, which makes them more universal,
- Huge importance in modern industrial fields – they are utilized in data components, electric drive systems, diagnostic systems, also industrial machines.
- Relatively small size with high pulling force – neodymium magnets offer impressive pulling force in small dimensions, which makes them useful in compact constructions
Limitations
- At strong impacts they can crack, therefore we advise placing them in steel cases. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- NdFeB magnets lose strength when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore during using outdoors, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture
- Due to limitations in creating nuts and complex forms in magnets, we propose using a housing - magnetic holder.
- Potential hazard to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, if swallowed, which becomes key in the aspect of protecting the youngest. Furthermore, small elements of these devices can complicate diagnosis medical after entering the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Pull force analysis
Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameters – what it depends on?
- using a plate made of low-carbon steel, acting as a circuit closing element
- whose thickness reaches at least 10 mm
- with an ideally smooth touching surface
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (metal-to-metal)
- during detachment in a direction vertical to the plane
- at room temperature
Practical lifting capacity: influencing factors
- Clearance – the presence of foreign body (paint, tape, air) acts as an insulator, which lowers power rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Force direction – declared lifting capacity refers to pulling vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet exhibits significantly lower power (typically approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Wall thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Part of the magnetic field passes through the material instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Steel grade – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Stainless steels may attract less.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which improves field saturation. Uneven metal weaken the grip.
- Thermal factor – hot environment reduces magnetic field. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.
Holding force was checked on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet and the plate lowers the holding force.
H&S for magnets
Threat to electronics
Do not bring magnets near a purse, computer, or TV. The magnetism can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
Allergic reactions
Some people experience a sensitization to nickel, which is the standard coating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact can result in a rash. We suggest use safety gloves.
Magnet fragility
Despite metallic appearance, neodymium is delicate and not impact-resistant. Do not hit, as the magnet may shatter into sharp, dangerous pieces.
Conscious usage
Before use, read the rules. Sudden snapping can break the magnet or hurt your hand. Be predictive.
Do not give to children
Only for adults. Small elements can be swallowed, causing severe trauma. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Keep away from electronics
A powerful magnetic field disrupts the operation of magnetometers in phones and navigation systems. Maintain magnets near a smartphone to prevent damaging the sensors.
Serious injuries
Large magnets can crush fingers in a fraction of a second. Do not put your hand betwixt two strong magnets.
Flammability
Drilling and cutting of NdFeB material carries a risk of fire risk. Magnetic powder reacts violently with oxygen and is difficult to extinguish.
Heat sensitivity
Control the heat. Exposing the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will ruin its properties and pulling force.
Life threat
Individuals with a ICD have to keep an large gap from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the functioning of the implant.
