Strengths and weaknesses of rare earth magnets.
Advantages
- They have constant strength, and over nearly 10 years their performance decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
- They do not lose their magnetic properties even under close interference source,
- A magnet with a smooth silver surface looks better,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a concentrated magnetic field – this is a distinguishing feature,
- Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, allowing for action at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
- Thanks to flexibility in constructing and the capacity to modify to individual projects,
- Huge importance in advanced technology sectors – they serve a role in magnetic memories, electric drive systems, medical equipment, also modern systems.
- Thanks to their power density, small magnets offer high operating force, with minimal size,
Cons
- At very strong impacts they can break, therefore we advise placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
- We warn that neodymium magnets can reduce their power at high temperatures. To prevent this, we recommend our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material resistant to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- Due to limitations in creating nuts and complicated forms in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic mount.
- Potential hazard related to microscopic parts of magnets are risky, if swallowed, which gains importance in the context of child health protection. Additionally, tiny parts of these products are able to complicate diagnosis medical when they are in the body.
- Higher cost of purchase is a significant factor to consider compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications
Lifting parameters
Breakaway strength of the magnet in ideal conditions – what contributes to it?
- on a block made of structural steel, optimally conducting the magnetic flux
- possessing a massiveness of at least 10 mm to avoid saturation
- with a plane free of scratches
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (metal-to-metal)
- for force applied at a right angle (in the magnet axis)
- in temp. approx. 20°C
Determinants of practical lifting force of a magnet
- Gap (between the magnet and the metal), because even a microscopic clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a drastic drop in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or debris).
- Loading method – declared lifting capacity refers to detachment vertically. When attempting to slide, the magnet holds much less (often approx. 20-30% of maximum force).
- Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Paper-thin metal restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Plate material – mild steel attracts best. Higher carbon content reduce magnetic permeability and lifting capacity.
- Surface structure – the smoother and more polished the surface, the better the adhesion and higher the lifting capacity. Roughness creates an air distance.
- Heat – NdFeB sinters have a negative temperature coefficient. When it is hot they are weaker, and in frost gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity was determined using a steel plate with a smooth surface of suitable thickness (min. 20 mm), under perpendicular pulling force, however under shearing force the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the holding force.
Precautions when working with neodymium magnets
Powerful field
Before starting, check safety instructions. Sudden snapping can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Be predictive.
Bodily injuries
Big blocks can break fingers instantly. Never place your hand betwixt two strong magnets.
Medical interference
Health Alert: Strong magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
Sensitization to coating
Warning for allergy sufferers: The Ni-Cu-Ni coating consists of nickel. If an allergic reaction happens, cease handling magnets and use protective gear.
GPS and phone interference
GPS units and smartphones are extremely sensitive to magnetic fields. Direct contact with a strong magnet can ruin the sensors in your phone.
Material brittleness
Neodymium magnets are ceramic materials, which means they are fragile like glass. Impact of two magnets will cause them cracking into shards.
Do not overheat magnets
Control the heat. Exposing the magnet above 80 degrees Celsius will ruin its magnetic structure and strength.
Magnetic media
Do not bring magnets near a purse, laptop, or screen. The magnetic field can destroy these devices and wipe information from cards.
Product not for children
Adult use only. Small elements can be swallowed, leading to severe trauma. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
Fire warning
Fire warning: Rare earth powder is explosive. Do not process magnets without safety gear as this risks ignition.
