Advantages and disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Advantages
- Their power is maintained, and after approximately ten years it decreases only by ~1% (theoretically),
- They do not lose their magnetic properties even under external field action,
- The use of an aesthetic coating of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to look better,
- Magnetic induction on the working part of the magnet remains maximum,
- Through (appropriate) combination of ingredients, they can achieve high thermal resistance, enabling functioning at temperatures reaching 230°C and above...
- Thanks to versatility in designing and the ability to modify to complex applications,
- Universal use in electronics industry – they find application in HDD drives, electromotive mechanisms, advanced medical instruments, and technologically advanced constructions.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they offer powerful magnetic field, making them ideal for precision applications
Limitations
- At strong impacts they can break, therefore we recommend placing them in steel cases. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
- When exposed to high temperature, neodymium magnets suffer a drop in strength. Often, when the temperature exceeds 80°C, their strength decreases (depending on the size and shape of the magnet). For those who need magnets for extreme conditions, we offer [AH] versions withstanding up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore while using outdoors, we advise using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- We recommend casing - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in producing threads inside the magnet and complicated shapes.
- Possible danger to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, if swallowed, which becomes key in the context of child safety. Furthermore, small elements of these devices are able to disrupt the diagnostic process medical in case of swallowing.
- Due to complex production process, their price is relatively high,
Holding force characteristics
Detachment force of the magnet in optimal conditions – what it depends on?
- using a plate made of mild steel, acting as a magnetic yoke
- whose transverse dimension is min. 10 mm
- with a surface cleaned and smooth
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (metal-to-metal)
- during detachment in a direction vertical to the plane
- in neutral thermal conditions
Practical aspects of lifting capacity – factors
- Air gap (between the magnet and the plate), since even a very small distance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a decrease in force by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, corrosion or dirt).
- Force direction – remember that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under shear forces, the capacity drops drastically, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
- Base massiveness – insufficiently thick plate does not close the flux, causing part of the flux to be wasted into the air.
- Steel grade – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Hardened steels may attract less.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which improves force. Uneven metal reduce efficiency.
- Thermal factor – hot environment weakens pulling force. Too high temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.
Holding force was tested on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, however under parallel forces the holding force is lower. Additionally, even a small distance between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the load capacity.
Precautions when working with neodymium magnets
Safe distance
Powerful magnetic fields can erase data on credit cards, HDDs, and other magnetic media. Stay away of min. 10 cm.
Keep away from children
Absolutely keep magnets out of reach of children. Choking hazard is high, and the consequences of magnets clamping inside the body are fatal.
Immense force
Exercise caution. Rare earth magnets act from a distance and connect with huge force, often faster than you can move away.
Pacemakers
Individuals with a pacemaker must maintain an safe separation from magnets. The magnetism can interfere with the operation of the life-saving device.
Heat sensitivity
Avoid heat. NdFeB magnets are susceptible to temperature. If you need resistance above 80°C, ask us about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
Physical harm
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so immense that it can result in hematomas, pinching, and broken bones. Protective gloves are recommended.
Do not drill into magnets
Dust created during cutting of magnets is flammable. Do not drill into magnets unless you are an expert.
Allergy Warning
A percentage of the population suffer from a hypersensitivity to nickel, which is the typical protective layer for neodymium magnets. Extended handling may cause an allergic reaction. It is best to wear safety gloves.
Magnets are brittle
Despite metallic appearance, the material is brittle and not impact-resistant. Avoid impacts, as the magnet may crumble into hazardous fragments.
GPS and phone interference
Be aware: neodymium magnets produce a field that confuses sensitive sensors. Maintain a safe distance from your mobile, tablet, and navigation systems.
