Frequently asked questions

Which rod should I choose for fine contamination?
For particles below 0.5 mm — a Ø32 mm rod in grade N52, with surface induction of about 10,000 Gs. A Ø25 rod in grade N42 gives about 6,500 Gs and is chosen for contamination above 1 mm: bolts, washers, pieces of wire.
Which rod pitch should I choose?
The narrow pitch, 40 mm centre to centre, for fine free-flowing fractions — it gives denser coverage of the cross-section. The wide pitch, 50 mm, for granulates and for damp, greasy or sticky materials, where a narrow pitch risks the material bridging above the rods.
Why does efficiency drop after a few weeks of operation?
Almost always because the separator has not been cleaned. The layer of captured particles shields the field, and further particles settle on that layer rather than on the rod surface, where the gradient is far stronger. The magnets themselves do not weaken at that rate.

Magnetic Field

Other offers

It is the "heart" of every magnetic filter used in industry for cleaning raw materials. Its task is separation (separation) of metal filings from the transported material. High magnetic induction on the surface allows catching the finest iron particles.
The rod consists of a cover tube made of high-quality acid-resistant steel (AISI 304 or 316). The center is filled with NdFeB magnets and pole pieces, arranged to maximize the field on the tube surface. Such construction ensures full resistance to corrosion, water, oils, and acids.
Metal filings stick to the surface very strongly, so cleaning requires strength or cleverness. You can use compressed air or special non-magnetic strippers (rings). For easier operation, it is worth considering ordering a rod in a version with a cleaning sleeve.
The more Gauss, the smaller and more weakly magnetic particles will be effectively caught. For basic machine protection against pieces of iron, standard power is sufficient. High induction is necessary when contaminants are microscopic or weakly magnetic.
We fulfill individual orders for bars perfectly matched to your machine or separator. The rod end is strictly adapted to the fastening system in your device. Contact us for a quote on a non-standard dimension.

Pros as well as cons of neodymium magnets.

Strengths

Apart from their strong power, neodymium magnets have these key benefits:
  • They do not lose magnetism, even after around 10 years – the reduction in strength is only ~1% (theoretically),
  • They have excellent resistance to magnetism drop when exposed to external fields,
  • The use of an shiny coating of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to be more visually attractive,
  • The surface of neodymium magnets generates a powerful magnetic field – this is a key feature,
  • Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the shape) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
  • Possibility of detailed machining and adjusting to specific applications,
  • Universal use in electronics industry – they are commonly used in hard drives, brushless drives, advanced medical instruments, also multitasking production systems.
  • Thanks to efficiency per cm³, small magnets offer high operating force, occupying minimum space,

Weaknesses

Problematic aspects of neodymium magnets and ways of using them
  • At very strong impacts they can break, therefore we recommend placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage, as well as increases the magnet's durability.
  • Neodymium magnets lose force when exposed to high temperatures. After reaching 80°C, many of them experience permanent drop of power (a factor is the shape as well as dimensions of the magnet). We offer magnets specially adapted to work at temperatures up to 230°C marked [AH], which are very resistant to heat
  • Magnets exposed to a humid environment can corrode. Therefore when using outdoors, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
  • Limited possibility of creating threads in the magnet and complex shapes - recommended is a housing - mounting mechanism.
  • Health risk resulting from small fragments of magnets pose a threat, if swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child health protection. It is also worth noting that tiny parts of these magnets can disrupt the diagnostic process medical when they are in the body.
  • Higher cost of purchase is one of the disadvantages compared to ceramic magnets, especially in budget applications

Pull force analysis

Best holding force of the magnet in ideal parameterswhat contributes to it?

The force parameter is a measurement result performed under specific, ideal conditions:
  • using a base made of mild steel, serving as a magnetic yoke
  • whose transverse dimension is min. 10 mm
  • with an polished contact surface
  • under conditions of ideal adhesion (surface-to-surface)
  • during detachment in a direction vertical to the plane
  • at ambient temperature approx. 20 degrees Celsius

Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors

Real force is influenced by working environment parameters, including (from most important):
  • Clearance – the presence of foreign body (paint, dirt, air) acts as an insulator, which reduces capacity rapidly (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
  • Direction of force – highest force is available only during perpendicular pulling. The shear force of the magnet along the plate is standardly many times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
  • Element thickness – for full efficiency, the steel must be adequately massive. Thin sheet restricts the attraction force (the magnet "punches through" it).
  • Steel type – low-carbon steel gives the best results. Alloy steels lower magnetic properties and holding force.
  • Surface finish – full contact is obtained only on smooth steel. Rough texture reduce the real contact area, weakening the magnet.
  • Temperature influence – hot environment reduces pulling force. Exceeding the limit temperature can permanently demagnetize the magnet.

Lifting capacity testing was conducted on plates with a smooth surface of suitable thickness, under perpendicular forces, however under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. In addition, even a minimal clearance between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the load capacity.

Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Dust explosion hazard

Powder generated during grinding of magnets is combustible. Avoid drilling into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.

Electronic hazard

Intense magnetic fields can corrupt files on payment cards, hard drives, and other magnetic media. Maintain a gap of min. 10 cm.

Phone sensors

Navigation devices and smartphones are highly susceptible to magnetism. Direct contact with a powerful NdFeB magnet can permanently damage the internal compass in your phone.

Pinching danger

Protect your hands. Two powerful magnets will join immediately with a force of massive weight, destroying everything in their path. Be careful!

Demagnetization risk

Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) undergo demagnetization when the temperature surpasses 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.

Metal Allergy

Some people suffer from a contact allergy to Ni, which is the typical protective layer for NdFeB magnets. Frequent touching may cause a rash. It is best to use protective gloves.

Medical implants

Health Alert: Strong magnets can deactivate pacemakers and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.

Respect the power

Use magnets with awareness. Their immense force can shock even professionals. Be vigilant and respect their power.

This is not a toy

Product intended for adults. Small elements can be swallowed, causing serious injuries. Keep out of reach of kids and pets.

Magnet fragility

Beware of splinters. Magnets can fracture upon uncontrolled impact, ejecting sharp fragments into the air. Eye protection is mandatory.
