Pros as well as cons of neodymium magnets.
Advantages
- Their strength is durable, and after around 10 years it drops only by ~1% (according to research),
- They are resistant to demagnetization induced by external disturbances,
- In other words, due to the aesthetic surface of nickel, the element is aesthetically pleasing,
- Neodymium magnets achieve maximum magnetic induction on a contact point, which allows for strong attraction,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Possibility of detailed machining as well as adapting to precise requirements,
- Huge importance in electronics industry – they are commonly used in data components, motor assemblies, diagnostic systems, and modern systems.
- Compactness – despite small sizes they provide effective action, making them ideal for precision applications
Disadvantages
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we recommend using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously increases its durability.
- Neodymium magnets decrease their power under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their force. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore during using outdoors, we advise using water-impermeable magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- Due to limitations in creating nuts and complicated forms in magnets, we propose using casing - magnetic mechanism.
- Possible danger resulting from small fragments of magnets can be dangerous, when accidentally swallowed, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. Additionally, tiny parts of these devices can be problematic in diagnostics medical after entering the body.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which increases costs of application in large quantities
Lifting parameters
Detachment force of the magnet in optimal conditions – what contributes to it?
- with the use of a sheet made of low-carbon steel, ensuring maximum field concentration
- possessing a thickness of min. 10 mm to ensure full flux closure
- with an ideally smooth touching surface
- with zero gap (no coatings)
- under vertical force direction (90-degree angle)
- in neutral thermal conditions
Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors
- Air gap (between the magnet and the plate), because even a tiny clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) leads to a reduction in force by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or dirt).
- Force direction – note that the magnet holds strongest perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the capacity drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
- Element thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be adequately massive. Thin sheet restricts the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Material composition – not every steel reacts the same. High carbon content weaken the attraction effect.
- Surface quality – the more even the surface, the better the adhesion and higher the lifting capacity. Roughness acts like micro-gaps.
- Thermal conditions – NdFeB sinters have a negative temperature coefficient. At higher temperatures they are weaker, and at low temperatures gain strength (up to a certain limit).
Lifting capacity was assessed with the use of a steel plate with a smooth surface of optimal thickness (min. 20 mm), under vertically applied force, however under parallel forces the lifting capacity is smaller. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate lowers the load capacity.
H&S for magnets
Adults only
Always store magnets out of reach of children. Ingestion danger is significant, and the effects of magnets connecting inside the body are fatal.
Keep away from electronics
An intense magnetic field disrupts the operation of compasses in phones and navigation systems. Maintain magnets close to a smartphone to avoid damaging the sensors.
Respect the power
Before use, check safety instructions. Sudden snapping can destroy the magnet or injure your hand. Think ahead.
Serious injuries
Mind your fingers. Two large magnets will snap together immediately with a force of massive weight, destroying everything in their path. Exercise extreme caution!
Safe distance
Do not bring magnets close to a purse, computer, or screen. The magnetism can permanently damage these devices and wipe information from cards.
Warning for heart patients
Life threat: Neodymium magnets can deactivate heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
Dust explosion hazard
Dust generated during cutting of magnets is flammable. Do not drill into magnets without proper cooling and knowledge.
Warning for allergy sufferers
Some people experience a contact allergy to Ni, which is the standard coating for NdFeB magnets. Prolonged contact may cause an allergic reaction. We suggest wear protective gloves.
Protective goggles
Neodymium magnets are sintered ceramics, meaning they are very brittle. Clashing of two magnets leads to them breaking into small pieces.
Heat sensitivity
Avoid heat. NdFeB magnets are sensitive to temperature. If you require operation above 80°C, ask us about special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
