Advantages and disadvantages of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Advantages
- They have stable power, and over around 10 years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
- Neodymium magnets prove to be highly resistant to demagnetization caused by external interference,
- The use of an refined layer of noble metals (nickel, gold, silver) causes the element to look better,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a powerful magnetic field – this is a distinguishing feature,
- Due to their durability and thermal resistance, neodymium magnets can operate (depending on the form) even at high temperatures reaching 230°C or more...
- Thanks to flexibility in constructing and the capacity to customize to unusual requirements,
- Wide application in advanced technology sectors – they are commonly used in magnetic memories, electromotive mechanisms, diagnostic systems, as well as complex engineering applications.
- Thanks to efficiency per cm³, small magnets offer high operating force, in miniature format,
Disadvantages
- To avoid cracks upon strong impacts, we suggest using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- Neodymium magnets lose their force under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain stability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Due to the susceptibility of magnets to corrosion in a humid environment, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material stable to moisture, in case of application outdoors
- Limited ability of creating threads in the magnet and complicated shapes - preferred is casing - magnet mounting.
- Possible danger to health – tiny shards of magnets can be dangerous, if swallowed, which becomes key in the context of child safety. Additionally, small components of these devices can complicate diagnosis medical in case of swallowing.
- High unit price – neodymium magnets cost more than other types of magnets (e.g. ferrite), which hinders application in large quantities
Pull force analysis
Magnetic strength at its maximum – what it depends on?
- using a plate made of high-permeability steel, serving as a magnetic yoke
- whose thickness reaches at least 10 mm
- characterized by smoothness
- under conditions of no distance (surface-to-surface)
- during pulling in a direction perpendicular to the mounting surface
- at conditions approx. 20°C
Practical lifting capacity: influencing factors
- Gap (between the magnet and the plate), since even a very small clearance (e.g. 0.5 mm) can cause a drastic drop in lifting capacity by up to 50% (this also applies to varnish, rust or dirt).
- Force direction – remember that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the holding force drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
- Substrate thickness – to utilize 100% power, the steel must be sufficiently thick. Thin sheet limits the lifting capacity (the magnet "punches through" it).
- Metal type – different alloys reacts the same. Alloy additives weaken the interaction with the magnet.
- Surface quality – the smoother and more polished the surface, the better the adhesion and stronger the hold. Unevenness creates an air distance.
- Thermal conditions – neodymium magnets have a negative temperature coefficient. When it is hot they lose power, and at low temperatures they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Holding force was measured on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, whereas under parallel forces the load capacity is reduced by as much as 5 times. Additionally, even a slight gap between the magnet’s surface and the plate reduces the lifting capacity.
Safe handling of neodymium magnets
Medical implants
Patients with a heart stimulator have to maintain an large gap from magnets. The magnetic field can interfere with the functioning of the implant.
Allergic reactions
Medical facts indicate that nickel (standard magnet coating) is a potent allergen. For allergy sufferers, refrain from touching magnets with bare hands or choose coated magnets.
Swallowing risk
Strictly keep magnets away from children. Ingestion danger is high, and the effects of magnets connecting inside the body are fatal.
Safe operation
Be careful. Neodymium magnets act from a long distance and snap with massive power, often faster than you can move away.
Precision electronics
Note: rare earth magnets generate a field that confuses sensitive sensors. Maintain a separation from your phone, tablet, and GPS.
Keep away from computers
Equipment safety: Neodymium magnets can damage data carriers and delicate electronics (pacemakers, medical aids, timepieces).
Serious injuries
Pinching hazard: The attraction force is so great that it can result in blood blisters, crushing, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
Eye protection
NdFeB magnets are ceramic materials, meaning they are very brittle. Impact of two magnets leads to them breaking into small pieces.
Combustion hazard
Mechanical processing of neodymium magnets poses a fire hazard. Neodymium dust oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Operating temperature
Keep cool. Neodymium magnets are sensitive to heat. If you require operation above 80°C, look for special high-temperature series (H, SH, UH).
