Strengths as well as weaknesses of Nd2Fe14B magnets.
Pros
- They do not lose strength, even over around ten years – the drop in power is only ~1% (theoretically),
- Neodymium magnets are exceptionally resistant to loss of magnetic properties caused by external field sources,
- A magnet with a metallic nickel surface is more attractive,
- They show high magnetic induction at the operating surface, which improves attraction properties,
- Thanks to resistance to high temperature, they can operate (depending on the shape) even at temperatures up to 230°C and higher...
- Considering the potential of precise shaping and adaptation to individualized solutions, neodymium magnets can be produced in a wide range of geometric configurations, which amplifies use scope,
- Versatile presence in electronics industry – they are used in hard drives, drive modules, diagnostic systems, and modern systems.
- Thanks to efficiency per cm³, small magnets offer high operating force, occupying minimum space,
Weaknesses
- To avoid cracks under impact, we recommend using special steel holders. Such a solution protects the magnet and simultaneously improves its durability.
- We warn that neodymium magnets can reduce their strength at high temperatures. To prevent this, we recommend our specialized [AH] magnets, which work effectively even at 230°C.
- When exposed to humidity, magnets start to rust. To use them in conditions outside, it is recommended to use protective magnets, such as those in rubber or plastics, which prevent oxidation and corrosion.
- We suggest cover - magnetic mechanism, due to difficulties in producing nuts inside the magnet and complex forms.
- Health risk related to microscopic parts of magnets pose a threat, in case of ingestion, which is particularly important in the context of child safety. Furthermore, small elements of these magnets are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical when they are in the body.
- With large orders the cost of neodymium magnets is economically unviable,
Pull force analysis
Breakaway strength of the magnet in ideal conditions – what contributes to it?
- using a plate made of low-carbon steel, functioning as a ideal flux conductor
- whose thickness reaches at least 10 mm
- with a plane perfectly flat
- under conditions of ideal adhesion (metal-to-metal)
- under axial application of breakaway force (90-degree angle)
- in stable room temperature
Lifting capacity in practice – influencing factors
- Space between magnet and steel – even a fraction of a millimeter of distance (caused e.g. by veneer or dirt) significantly weakens the pulling force, often by half at just 0.5 mm.
- Load vector – maximum parameter is reached only during perpendicular pulling. The force required to slide of the magnet along the plate is standardly many times smaller (approx. 1/5 of the lifting capacity).
- Wall thickness – thin material does not allow full use of the magnet. Magnetic flux penetrates through instead of converting into lifting capacity.
- Material composition – not every steel attracts identically. High carbon content worsen the attraction effect.
- Plate texture – smooth surfaces guarantee perfect abutment, which improves field saturation. Rough surfaces weaken the grip.
- Thermal environment – heating the magnet causes a temporary drop of induction. It is worth remembering the thermal limit for a given model.
Holding force was checked on a smooth steel plate of 20 mm thickness, when the force acted perpendicularly, in contrast under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as 75%. Moreover, even a slight gap between the magnet and the plate lowers the lifting capacity.
Safe handling of NdFeB magnets
Handling rules
Before starting, check safety instructions. Sudden snapping can destroy the magnet or hurt your hand. Think ahead.
Adults only
Only for adults. Small elements pose a choking risk, causing intestinal necrosis. Store out of reach of children and animals.
Pacemakers
Individuals with a pacemaker have to keep an absolute distance from magnets. The magnetism can stop the operation of the implant.
Compass and GPS
An intense magnetic field negatively affects the operation of magnetometers in phones and navigation systems. Keep magnets close to a device to avoid breaking the sensors.
Permanent damage
Standard neodymium magnets (N-type) lose magnetization when the temperature surpasses 80°C. The loss of strength is permanent.
Dust is flammable
Fire warning: Rare earth powder is explosive. Do not process magnets without safety gear as this risks ignition.
Risk of cracking
Beware of splinters. Magnets can fracture upon violent connection, ejecting sharp fragments into the air. We recommend safety glasses.
Allergy Warning
A percentage of the population suffer from a contact allergy to nickel, which is the common plating for neodymium magnets. Prolonged contact can result in dermatitis. It is best to use safety gloves.
Threat to electronics
Data protection: Strong magnets can damage payment cards and sensitive devices (pacemakers, medical aids, timepieces).
Serious injuries
Big blocks can break fingers instantly. Under no circumstances put your hand betwixt two strong magnets.
