Strengths and weaknesses of neodymium magnets.
Benefits
- They have unchanged lifting capacity, and over nearly 10 years their attraction force decreases symbolically – ~1% (according to theory),
- They are resistant to demagnetization induced by external field influence,
- By applying a reflective coating of nickel, the element presents an proper look,
- The surface of neodymium magnets generates a intense magnetic field – this is one of their assets,
- Made from properly selected components, these magnets show impressive resistance to high heat, enabling them to function (depending on their shape) at temperatures up to 230°C and above...
- Possibility of detailed forming and adapting to specific conditions,
- Universal use in electronics industry – they are utilized in magnetic memories, drive modules, advanced medical instruments, as well as multitasking production systems.
- Thanks to efficiency per cm³, small magnets offer high operating force, in miniature format,
Disadvantages
- At strong impacts they can break, therefore we advise placing them in special holders. A metal housing provides additional protection against damage and increases the magnet's durability.
- Neodymium magnets decrease their power under the influence of heating. As soon as 80°C is exceeded, many of them start losing their power. Therefore, we recommend our special magnets marked [AH], which maintain durability even at temperatures up to 230°C
- Magnets exposed to a humid environment can rust. Therefore during using outdoors, we suggest using waterproof magnets made of rubber, plastic or other material protecting against moisture
- Due to limitations in realizing threads and complex shapes in magnets, we recommend using casing - magnetic mechanism.
- Possible danger to health – tiny shards of magnets pose a threat, when accidentally swallowed, which becomes key in the context of child health protection. Furthermore, tiny parts of these magnets are able to be problematic in diagnostics medical when they are in the body.
- With large orders the cost of neodymium magnets can be a barrier,
Lifting parameters
Maximum holding power of the magnet – what it depends on?
- on a block made of mild steel, effectively closing the magnetic flux
- possessing a thickness of minimum 10 mm to avoid saturation
- with a surface perfectly flat
- under conditions of gap-free contact (surface-to-surface)
- under perpendicular force direction (90-degree angle)
- in temp. approx. 20°C
Lifting capacity in real conditions – factors
- Clearance – the presence of foreign body (paint, tape, gap) interrupts the magnetic circuit, which reduces capacity steeply (even by 50% at 0.5 mm).
- Pull-off angle – remember that the magnet has greatest strength perpendicularly. Under sliding down, the holding force drops significantly, often to levels of 20-30% of the nominal value.
- Steel thickness – insufficiently thick plate does not close the flux, causing part of the flux to be escaped to the other side.
- Material type – ideal substrate is pure iron steel. Cast iron may attract less.
- Smoothness – ideal contact is obtained only on polished steel. Any scratches and bumps create air cushions, weakening the magnet.
- Heat – NdFeB sinters have a sensitivity to temperature. When it is hot they are weaker, and at low temperatures they can be stronger (up to a certain limit).
Holding force was checked on the plate surface of 20 mm thickness, when a perpendicular force was applied, whereas under attempts to slide the magnet the load capacity is reduced by as much as fivefold. In addition, even a small distance between the magnet and the plate decreases the holding force.
Safety rules for work with NdFeB magnets
Eye protection
Protect your eyes. Magnets can explode upon violent connection, ejecting sharp fragments into the air. Eye protection is mandatory.
Choking Hazard
Always keep magnets out of reach of children. Ingestion danger is high, and the effects of magnets clamping inside the body are tragic.
Operating temperature
Do not overheat. Neodymium magnets are sensitive to heat. If you need resistance above 80°C, inquire about HT versions (H, SH, UH).
Fire risk
Drilling and cutting of neodymium magnets poses a fire risk. Magnetic powder oxidizes rapidly with oxygen and is hard to extinguish.
Physical harm
Risk of injury: The attraction force is so immense that it can result in hematomas, crushing, and even bone fractures. Protective gloves are recommended.
Warning for heart patients
Health Alert: Strong magnets can turn off heart devices and defibrillators. Do not approach if you have medical devices.
Electronic devices
Powerful magnetic fields can destroy records on payment cards, HDDs, and other magnetic media. Maintain a gap of min. 10 cm.
Allergy Warning
Some people suffer from a hypersensitivity to Ni, which is the standard coating for NdFeB magnets. Extended handling might lead to dermatitis. We suggest use protective gloves.
Powerful field
Handle with care. Neodymium magnets attract from a distance and snap with huge force, often faster than you can move away.
Magnetic interference
A strong magnetic field negatively affects the functioning of compasses in smartphones and GPS navigation. Keep magnets close to a smartphone to avoid damaging the sensors.
